Dragon
True Dragons are intrinsically magical creatures, whose very being is tied to the magic which made them, among the Dragons.
There are eight Ancient Dragons, these Dragons have lived since the creation of the world and are demi-gods in the world, no other mortal creature can match their power.
All Dragons can trace their ancestry back to one of these eight dragons which are where their scale colour is derived.
New dragons are not hatched from an egg, indeed dragons lay many thousands of eggs that hatch into the various dragonkin species, Dragons (and Dragonkin) are androgenous, Dragonkin lacks the ability to reproduce at all and Dragons Lay eggs without the need of any mate.
Only a minute number of dragonkin ever ascend to become a True Dragon. Ascension requires a ritual in which a Dragonkin must consume a mote of power which becomes the Dragons Heart, the ritual also requires vast amounts of magically conductive metals and gemstones that are aligned to the correct Realm. Dragons often horde Motes of Power and Treasure so that they possess the materials necessary for their favoured offspring to ascend. But the Dragonkin themselves must be old and powerful, otherwise the ritual will consume and destroy them with arcane energy rather than allow them to ascend.
Once ascended the heart of a Dragon is tethered to one of the Ten Realms, a Dragon must be of the correct scale colour or the power of that realm will consume them (e.g. if a Bluescale Dragonkin tried to tether to the realm of fire, the fire of the realm would incinerate them. Once the tether is created the Realm will bleed into Achnelia just as it would if a portal were opened. This can transform the land around where a Dragon Lairs to take on properties of that Realm.
All Dragons are also powerful innate spellcasters, capable of drawing magic through their hearts directly from the Realm which allowed them to ascend.
