Corvus
Lord of Crows
Said to be one of the most secretive among the gods, certainly among those who inhabit the Shadowfell. Far off in a remote region of the plane, surrounded by little more than empty plains and jagged rock, he sits, residing within the confines of Arduum. He is said to hold dominion over this area, enforcing his will on any who might enter those dark plains from his Obsidian Spire. Many have sought to unravel his secrets and discover the past, but none have come anywhere close. What truths lie beyond those closed gates is anyone's guess.
Mistakenly, some will speak of his role in death, believing signs of the crow to be a dark omen dooming someone nearby to a horrible demise. No such claims have proven substantial, try as some might. That said, his Shadar-kai can be a dreadful sight to many; these cold servants carry out his will as they deem fit, often to someone else's detriment. In reality, no one truly knows Corvus, his methods, or his goals; the best anyone has is speculation and accounts from his Shadar-kai.
As his dominion grew, so too did his tower, a citadel designed to be the perfect bastion against any threat. And there have been, and are, many. Tales of riches and power locked away within its walls lead both armies of Man and Shadowfellians to try their luck conquering the Spire, unseating Corvus, and claiming the Obsidian Throne. None have yet come near this feat. Any force that's marched those vast empty plains has met its demise in one fashion or another. Most at the hands of his Shadar-kai, the sworn protectors of the Obsidian Throne.
Divine Domains
Despair, Sorrow, Grief, and Anguish are what his followers speak. These feelings of hopelessness and utter suffering are what Corvus desires and his Shadar-kai deliver. His loyal creations serve as his presence in the Material, allowing Corvus to remain in his Spire. It's hardly uncommon for those who witness his visage, or his designs, to find themselves on death's doorstep, further leading to confusion regarding Corvus' disposition as a deity. But, as his Shadar-kai or followers may contest, his gaze lies not on death but the terrible feelings surrounding it.
Though seldomly, Clerics of Death, Twilight, and Order can be found following Corvus and the Obsidian Throne.
Holy Books & Codes
Presently, there are no known books regarding Corvus or his Spire. Rumors of a rare few tomes from long ago fill the air when such a topic surfaces, but as with many things related to Corvus, the validity of such rumors may be questionable. While a few unpublished works exist among his followers, primarily, information on Corvus spreads by word of mouth. A legend that grows with time.
Divine Symbols & Sigils
Followers of Corvus, and his Shadar-kai alike, use a somewhat crudely painted emblem to denote the Lord of Crows. Each rendition may add a personal flair or be different from another, but its main aspects remain constant. A solid black circle flanked on either side by great black wings, and just underneath the semblance of a feathered tail is drawn.
Tenets of Faith
- Suffer not life in all its false beauty, but revel in its horrible truths.
- Cast off the shackles of morality, walk freely without regret or guilt; only in this way can one do what must be done.
- Man is but a small cog in an endless machine, one which will continue without him, as it has always done.
- Cruelty is merely another side of passion, as death is to life; there is no sense in fearing it.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
In times of darkness and despair, the Lord of Crows will sometimes appear to the afflicted or dying in visions. Each time, they find themselves standing alone in the seemingly infinite darkness. Surrounding them, floating among the abyss, are circles of flame as if chandeliers were hanging up above; countless more continue to light one after another, traveling in all directions until they are but tiny orange specs among the darkness far off in the distance. Their light seems to illuminate only the one pulled into the vision, leaving the rest as it was; pitch.
As if he were always there, the light catches a dark figure, his massive form becoming visible. The first thing anyone notices is a large ivory skull staring down at them, that of a crow's. With empty eyes, the emotionless visage peers into their souls. Humanoid in appearance, he stands with his arms behind him. The figure towers over the visionary at nearly ten feet by some accounts. He is shrouded in a flowing black cloak, the edges of which bleed into the surrounding abyss; though some would describe it as a deep purple rather than black. The figure appears to wear formal attire underneath, a black six-button suit jacket formed to his body crowned by a white cravat around the neck; similarly, he wears a set of fitted black pants. However, the sleeves of his jacket and pants have torn near the ends; just underneath, large black feathered limbs and the sharp taloned feet of a bird protrude.
No matter how his appearance may differ from each account, one aspect always remains. The figure asks a question; his beak opens as he speaks but hardly moves with each sound or syllable. Nonetheless, the question is heard clear as day in a voice that echoes throughout the abyss. It is said that, depending on how one answers this question, he will help or hinder them in their fight for self-preservation. Only through hindsight will one know which they've received. With his question answered, the circles of flame extinguish as the figure's cloak expands beyond him, forming great obsidian wings. And as the light illuminating them both fades, only his dark silhouette remains with its white skull before it. The figure fades into the abyss, and soon after, so does the visionary, reawakening in reality.
