Zakhara
Far to the south of Faerun, beyond Calimshan and even the jungles of Chult, are the Lands of Fate. Surrounded by waters thick with pirates and corsairs, Zakhara is a place less hospitable than most, but still braved by travelers who hope to profit from its exotic goods and strange magics. Like Kara-Tur, Zakhara seems a world away to Faerunians. It is thought of as a vast desert, sprinkled with glittering cities like scattered gems. Romantic tales abound of scimitar-wielding rogues riding flying carpets and of genies bound in service to humans. Their mages, called sha’ir, practice their magic with the aid of genies and, it is said, might carry the lineage of these elemental beings in their blood.
The Land of Fate is home to a diversity of non-human inhabitants, but the majority comprises of human Zakharans with brown skin, dark hair, and relatively small stature. Most speak the Midani language and share common cultural values of the ‘Enlightenment’. Only few Zakharans venture outside their homeland, and if they do, it is usually as traders. These traders are typically found only in the very south of Faerûn. At least two human groups are the exception to this rule: the peoples of the Bedine and Calishites came from the Land of Fate to Faerûn in the ancient past with the help of portals.
The continent is governed by a theocracy headed by the Grand Caliph, a prestigious ruler of the state, who rules from the capital city of Huzuz, the City of Delights. The symbol of Zakhara is a moon with trailing stars.
