Vestro's early life was marked by tragedy and responsibility. Growing up in the Pongoli family, he was steeped in the traditions of the Canzie business from an early age. His great grandparents had immigrated to Lighthaven generations ago, and since then, the Pongoli family had established itself as a prominent force in the city's economy. As the oldest of three brothers, Vestro had always known that he would eventually take over the family business, but his mother's death from Shadow Typhus when he was only 10 years old changed everything. Shadow Typhus was a particularly gruesome and debilitating disease, infecting a victim's shadow and causing them to slowly become a dark shade. Vestro's father's mistrust of the Paladins, the city's protectors, meant that he refused to seek help for his wife when she first began showing symptoms. As a result, Vestro and his brothers were forced to witness their own mother succumb to the disease, turning into a shade and attacking members of their own family and other citizens in the city. The experience left a deep scar on Vestro and his brothers. They were forced to deal with the aftermath of their mother's transformation, both emotionally and practically. Vestro's father grew increasingly secluded and untrusting of anyone, leaving the boys to fend for themselves. As the oldest, Vestro had to take on more and more responsibility, including running the family business from a young age. By the time he was 18, he had fully taken over as Usso, or boss, of the Pongoli family. Despite the trauma of his early years, Vestro was determined to make something of himself and his family. He worked tirelessly to expand the family's business interests and establish stronger ties with other influential figures in the city. Over time, he became a force to be reckoned with, respected and feared in equal measure.
