Personal history

Born to King Thrym and Queen Mey, Kara is the youngest of her father's many children and the only one to run away from home in such a dramatic fashion. After a particularly bloody display of her father's hatred of humans, Kara ran from home and sailed south before becoming shipwrecked on the island of Hindsola where she met another exile, Hjalmar Tunarhjelm. Initially, the two were hostile to one another as Hjalmar had been exiled and made a solitary home on the island and never intended to speak to another living thing again. Kara was initially very fearful of the small man she now shared a small island with as she had been told stories growing up of the dangerous, greedy, and wicked humans that drove her kind to near extinction. As winter set in, Hjalmar's cabin was destroyed by a storm and he was forced to stay in Kara's home for months until the thaw. Pragmatically, Hjalmar asked the giantess if he could settle with her while the snow raged outside and she agreed.   As the snow falls heavily outside, confining them indoors, Kara and Hjalmar find themselves huddled near the hearth, seeking warmth from the cold outside. The flickering flames cast dancing shadows on the walls, and the crackling of burning wood did not fill the silence between them, prompting Kara to share her thoughts with Hjalmar.   "Did you ever loved someone on the mainland, Hjalmar?" Kara's said in a soft and probing voice, her eyes filled with eager curiosity.   Hjalmar's eyes, usually so stern and guarded, soften as he looks at Kara. "I did once," he replies, his voice tinged with a hint of sadness.   Kara's heart sinks, sensing the weight of regret and loss in his words. She takes a deep breath, urging him to share his story if he's willing.   Hjalmar's gaze drifts into the distance as memories flood back. "Her name was Freaga," he begins, his voice tinged with nostalgia. "We were friends growing up, our father's ran the brewery together but we were never there, we always went out into the woods to play. A smile creeps across his face as he continues. "We built a little hut there and we'd always tell each other tales of what we'd do when we grew up."   A tender smile tugs at the corners of Kara's lips as she envisions the carefree days of their youth.   "When we got older, we spent even more time together," Hjalmar continues. "We both knew we were more than friends now because friends don't love like we did. I loved her with all my heart, I want to believe she loved me too, I thought we were going to be together forever."   Kara leans closer, her eyes fixed on Hjalmar, captivated by his story.   "But she always was better at knowing people than me. His voice deepens and shakes. She saw something in me that I hadn't fully understood myself," Hjalmar's voice tinged with regret. "She knew that I wasn't content, I wanted to be there, out on the sea, and travel the world. We'd talked about it constantly and I thought we'd travel the world together but we didn't."   Kara's heart aches for Hjalmar as she realizes the sacrifice he had to make.   "She grew up from the stories we told each other, she wanted a different life, one that I don't think I could have given her." Hjalmar continues, his gaze low and solemn. "As much as I begged her, as many times as I pleaded, I knew we were both different people now. She wanted a life I wasn't ready to live, the last time I saw her she called me an idiot, said she didn't want to see me again, that if I wanted to get myself killed somewhere far away, that I was welcome to it."   Tears glisten in Kara's eyes as she feels the weight of Hjalmar's unspoken sorrow.   "So I left, hoping that distance and adventure would help me forget her," Hjalmar admits. "But the memories won't go away, every day I miss her, I miss the dreams we shared in that hut in the woods, they were never just stories to me. I don't think I'll ever forget them."   Kara watched on in silence, holding back tears of her own, "what happened to her? do you know?" Kara asked probing him.   "Last I heard she got the life she wanted, settled down in town, and married, she had a child but she didn't make it, neither of them did." Hjalmar's voice cracks as he speaks and his voice is at a whisper.   the silence between them returns, heavier and fuller than before, with only an occasional tear hitting the ground. Hjalmar finally breaks, his head in his hands he sobs, crying and wailing, running his hands in his hair.   Silence forms again before Kara speaks, her voice becoming more like Hjalmar's   "It was dark out when I heard everyone gathering and marching off, I didn't know what was going on so I followed."   Hjalmar looks up from his hands, staring at her attentively "When they came to the village I didn't know what they planned to do until they drew blades and started attacking. I knew the village and I knew the people there were not the ones who had harmed us."   She pauses, trying to steady her emotions before continuing.   "My papa and my brother were there, I saw them kill all those people, I watched and I couldn't help them."   Kara's heart clenches as she recalls the brutality she witnessed. "My brother was there with them, I always knew he was good, thoughtful, generous, and... good. Every time I fell or I failed he was there to pick me up and tell me everything was going to be okay, pain passes but the lessons we learn stay with us, that's what he'd always say to me."   Once more Kara's eyes begin to well up, "But I saw his eyes, I didn't recognize them, they were wild like I've never seen, and what he did, I never knew he could do."   A tear escapes Kara's eye, and she quickly brushes it away. "I knew I couldn't stay with them after this, I knew that I couldn't stand by their side any longer. I thought that there had to be a better way."   Her voice grows stronger now with pride but longing. "I decided to go away, to get away from it all, I wanted to think that a different world was out there where things like this didn't happen."   Kara glances at Hjalmar, grateful for his presence and understanding. "When I wrecked here and found you, Hjalmar, I saw that not all of you were monsters, you didn't look at me like a monster and I knew I must be right. You showed me that I could be right, that my world could be real and I don't think I'll ever be able to repay you for that."   She takes a moment to steady herself, her eyes reflecting a newfound determination. "I don't want to be a part of that world. To us, to my people, life is a long path, and we all have to walk it. I don't want to be my family, I want to be better."   The silence now is a comfort because it is not silence but understanding, a bridge has been built, an old one that existed so long ago, a bridge that wants to be walked on again.

As winter came to spring, the two emerged from Kara's home to find that winter did not leave so suddenly and that they had an opportunity to leave the island but only in a small window. Making good on his promise to sail her south, Hjalmar and Kara built a ship, and the two set sail for the south in search of warmer days and more game to hunt and feed themselves with. This trajectory landed them far south of where any giant had gone before and on a collision course with another duo who had just recently met, a huntress and her attaché carrying an odd-looking stone, Marius and Leuctra.

History

On the surface, Marius and Kara are both still children, Marius has a gleeful and sly demeanor that Kara finds beyond interesting and a source of endless enjoyment. However, on the inside, each's past prevents them from expressing themselves to one another in the truest ways. For Marius, he's simply fearful of Kara, she reminds him a bit too much of the figure that emerged from the depths of the world and destroyed the only home he had. Marius is ashamed of the way he secretly feels about the giantess but no matter how much he tries to shake it, when he looks at her he has a hard time looking past it. Kara on the other hand has Marius as an escape, a new friend who saves her from the dreary and guilty Hjalmar, and someone who she feels she can relax around. Kara has suspicions about the fear Marius has towards her but the two have enough fun together that she tells herself she is imagining things.
