As winter approached and alliances were finalized, the battle preparations slowed, preparing to resume come spring. Miliim, however, seized this opportunity to better prepare themselves for the war to come. They set to work carving a tunnel through Indra's Shield west of Copari. The process took several months, but come the end of the second month in 199 AR, they were ready to burst free and begin the rush into Copari. This pass would come to be called "Mlinzjia", a mashup of the words int he Miliir phrase "The Marching Pass".

Alliances and battle preparations had droned on through much of the year 198. This had gone on for so long that the first snow was beginning to fall and hoarfrost was developing on the grasses of Zukei. Miliim, too, was nearly frozen over by this time, experiencing harsher winters than the southern nations of Zukei and Aerdis. War efforts seemed to be on hold, but Miliim was working in secret to further their efforts.

In eastern Suorr, Miliim had forces working to secretly and discreetly carve a massive, lengthy tunnel through Indra's Shield that would lead them to Copari by the time winter ended. It was the most significant tunneling effort in history, forming a path under the mountain that would span almost 170 kilometers. The carving was fraught with numerous disasters, including cave-ins and monster attacks, but it was eventually successful. Mining ceased about a kilometer shy of D'Casta's own mining tunnels, with intent to merge with them as soon as winter broke and war could begin.
