The Shattered Land
The Shattered Land was once the opulent Eastern Dreaux, ruled by the secular Imperador and the religious les Cardinaux Céruléens in the west. Containing the bulk of the martial force of Dreaux, the East was known as a relatively strong power, although never reaching the military power of Capellia. Eastern Dreaux was known to be more industrious than its western counterpart but still had a culture rich with artistic influences. Many of the best known bards of legend came from Eastern Dreaux: painters, poets, musicians, sculptors, and the like.
Unfortunately, the era of Eastern Dreaux came to a climatic end 1000 years ago at the conclusion of the Skybreaker Wars. At the onset the wars, ancient treaties with between Dreaux and Antynyx were called upon, and the Dreaucians dutifully followed their allies into battle against Capellia, Áit Scáth, and Áit Tanaí. Over years of fruitless aggression, however, the war of attrition took its toll on the Dreaucian military.
In the final days of the Skybreaker Wars, the Antynyxian fleet set sail from its futile attack of Áit Scáth, sailing up to Eastern Dreaux to regroup and reorganize for an assault on Áit Tanaí. While docked, however, a novel weapon known as the Hexblitz was set off in Eastern Dreaux. This led to the Shattering, a cataclysmic event that left Dreaux desolated, the Antynyxian fleet destroyed, and the sky of Aerd itself permanently "cracked", with marbling veins of magical energy coursing through.
There is much conjecture about how the Hexblitz was developed and by who. Most believe it was a Capellian technology, although any proof was annihilated in the Shattering. If the product of Capellian wartime ingenuity, it remains unclear how the bomb itself was smuggled into Eastern Dreaux as well as how the location of the Antynyxian fleet was known.
Since the Shattering, Eastern Dreaux has become a magical wasteland. The borders between planes are very thin, and the laws of time and physics have been rewritten. The lucky denizens of Dreaux wer mutated by the magical surge, with their descendants becoming the inherently magical beings known as Tieflings. The less lucky have experienced worse changes. Rumors abound about Dreaucian men and women who have been magically grafted into The Shattered Land itself.
While technically still a part of Dreaux, the Shattered Land remains wild, magical, dangerous, and mostly unexplored. It denizens are looked down upon by the superstitious as abominations, a symptom of a sickness present within their own reality.
