Trea Bennett

Head of the Sanguine Order Trea Bennett (a.k.a. The Breaker)

Trea grew up in the shadow of her half-sister Nyssa’s destined reign as queen, groomed not for glory but for sacrifice. From an early age, Trea believed her purpose was to be the one who bore the kingdom's burdens, a protector willing to cross lines others would not. Her father Jedrek’s rule as head of the Sanguine Order emphasized the harsh truth that power often comes at the cost of morality. Her mother, Lyrie, reinforced this lesson with pragmatic wisdom, teaching Trea that true leadership requires making choices others cannot stomach.   When her father died in 664, Trea assumed control of the Sanguine Order. The transition was brutal—internal dissent threatened to fracture the Order, and external threats to Ederaa loomed large. In those early days, Trea learned a painful truth: morality is a luxury that leaders cannot afford. Her vision of a perfect army of spellcasters to protect Ederaa began as a noble pursuit but soon became an obsession, especially as threats from the Void and factions like An Aghaidh grew.   Trea's methods escalated over time—imprisonment, experimentation, and even sacrifice—all justified as the price of peace. Each decision hardened her, and though a small part of her grieved the loss of her own humanity, she silenced that voice by telling herself it was all for the greater good.

Personality

Pragmatic to a Fault
Trea’s decisions are ruthlessly logical. She weighs lives like a ledger, sacrificing the few to save the many.
Martyr in Denial
Deep down, Trea knows she is sacrificing herself—her morality, her soul—but she buries these thoughts beneath layers of rationalization.
Unshakably Loyal
Her love for her sister Nyssa and nephew Valerian is the one thing that grounds her, though she expresses it through acts of protection rather than affection.
Detached and Intimidating
Trea’s cold demeanor and sharp intelligence make her seem untouchable, but this emotional distance isolates her.

Motivations

Trea believes her sacrifices are necessary to ensure the survival of Ederaa. She tells herself that if she becomes a monster, it is only to keep true monsters at bay. Her ultimate loyalty lies with her half-sister. She sees herself as the shield that allows Nyssa to rule untainted by the kingdom’s darker realities, trying to keep the image of the world for her more colorful, than Trea herself was ever allowed to see it. Still, she is obsessed with creating a flawless magical force that can eradicate any threat. She views her humanity—and the humanity of others—as expendable in this pursuit.

Inner Conflict

Trea’s sacrifice of her humanity is not without cost. Though she outwardly appears unshaken, cracks in her resolve manifest in private: The faces of those sacrificed for her experiments occasionally haunt her dreams and when faced with innocent victims—especially children—she feels a fleeting pang of guilt, though she suppresses it. Her cold exterior alienates even those who might support her, leaving her isolated and without confidants. Despite these struggles, Trea presses forward, convinced that her suffering is a necessary price to pay for Ederaa’s safety.

Family

Father: Jedrek Bennett (former leader of the Sanguine Order)
The former leader of the Sanguine Order and a trusted confidant of King Brynmor Valderin. Jedrek was a pragmatic man whose life was defined by service to the crown. His belief in sacrifice for the greater good profoundly influenced Trea.
Mother: Lyrie Bennett
A half-elven officer of the Order and Jedrek’s second wife. Lyrie embodied discipline and ambition, traits she instilled in Trea. Together, Jedrek and Lyrie envisioned Trea as a unifying force—a prodigy who could continue their legacy.
Half-Sister: Nyssa Valderin (Queen of Ederaa)
The queen of Ederaa and Trea’s elder half-sister. While Trea harbors a fierce loyalty to Nyssa, she views her as idealistic and blind to the sacrifices necessary to maintain Ederaa’s stability. Trea acts as a shield for Nyssa, taking on the burdens of morally dubious decisions to preserve her sister’s dream of a peaceful kingdom.
Nephew: Valerian Valderin
The young Lord General and heir to the throne. Valerian represents a direct threat to Trea’s vision when he uncovers the Sanguine Order’s darker practices. His idealism and determination to reform the Order drive a wedge between him and Trea, culminating in a bitter conflict.
Brother In-Law: Tearlach Valderin (King of Ederaa)
The King, who is blissfully unaware of the Sanguine Order and their doings. Trea never really paid a lot of attention to her king, at least not more than she was obliged to.
