Sanguine Order

Established to conquer the inferiority to the elves, the Sanguine Order is sworn to protect the Kingdom of Ederaa by all means necessary.

Origin & History

After the loss of her husband Berkan Valderin and her oldest son Kaern Valderin during the war between Ederaa and Cirabaen, Queen Deanna Valderin was filled with deep anger and hatred towards the elves. With the ending of the war in the year 316 and the crowning of her other son Lucien Valderin, Deanna decided to take the fate of Ederaa into her own hands and founded the secret organization of the Sanguine Order to handle any uprising problems and upcoming threats the Kingdom of Ederaa might face in the future. Not even telling her own family about her 'project' she started plans to raise her own magically gifted army to be able to face the elven wizards and any other threat that might come through the portal if the need ever arises.

Methods & Resources

In the beginning the only way to enrich the human gene pool with arcane abilities was to kidnap mostly pregnant elven women or babies and children before the age of around 4 and bring them back home. Today many childless and single women in Ederaa are willing to birth a gifted child for the order in return for a good compensation and the knowledge that their child will become one of the most important people in the kingdom.   The magically gifted elven women are used as mothers to birth children for the order. To contain them and suppress their magic the outsides of their cells are lined with Vorium(Mineral), a material harvested from the Azuremist which is known for its hunger for arcane power. It is slowly draining the essence from nearby creatures and things. The useful byproduct of this way of containment is Altilium(Mineral), which is later crafted into weapons and armor for the order's knights. When their arcane power is fully drained, the women are removed from their cells and made disappear.   The seized babies and children are raised along the others inside the order by their adopted parents. Most of the times their ears are cut and put in a cast, to grow into a more human looking and less elvish shape. Except being kept oblivious of their real past, they enjoy a loved and safe upbringing inside their families, mostly inside Thornshire itself. They are going to school like all the other children in Ederaa and not only are taught how to read and write, but also how to handle their arcane powers properly and without abuse. Another important suspect in school is the history of Ederaa and how important it is to keep the kingdom and the people they love save. Their childhood is kept as positive as possible to make them bond even more with their home.   In their teens most of the gifted are either joining the ranks of the order as trainee Sanguine Protectors or as craftsmen, depending on their power and skills.

Structure & Members

Since the year 664 the order is lead by Trea Bennett, the child of the former human leader of the order Jedrek Bennett and his half-elven wife Lyrie Bennett. She is the half-sister of the queen of Ederaa Nyssa Valderin, sharing the same father. Only the high ranking officers and overseers are knowing of the dark secrets inside the underground dungeons. Most of the lower ranked members only know that children, are brought here to be raised and trained, left clueless about the darker secrets beyond their feet.

Sanguine Protectors

Prepared since childhood and trained for their role, only the best of the best with high arcane potential manage to become a Sanguine Protector. This elite force is used to secure peace inside the kingdom where all other means just lead to failure. A small group of protectors is stationed with the crown inside the castle of Fairview and acts as the royal 'Sanguine Guard'.

Centers of Power

The capital of the order is Thornshire, a fortress which to the outside world appears more like a monastery. Order halls are found in all larger cities in Ederaa and offer exclusive access to members. All larger roadside inns have a backroom prepared for the order if the need arises and a strict "no interruption and no questions asked" policy.

Enemies and Weaknesses

The biggest opposing force to the Sanguine Order is the elven group An Aghaidh. While one part of the group is trying to push Cirabaen into another war against Ederaa, to show their superiority and that they are not to be taken easily, the other part focuses more on freeing elves captured by the order and educating children that were born into it. Any information about the order leaking into public is a huge danger to their doings and they try to prevent it by any means. Anyone killed by the order is publicly falsely exposed as a 'Ciraen Spy', a threat to the kingdom, to 'right' the murder.

Public Opinion and Rumors

Most Ederaans highly respect the order and support it with donations. Publicly they are known for taking in the unwanted children of assault by elves near the border and raising them to become good citizens and soldiers who can forget about their dark past and prevent similar things from happening again. They would also adopt gifted children that had been abandoned by or lost their parents for any reason. Even though most of it is a lie, it is close enough to the truth to not be questioned by the public. The crown is very grateful for the provided magical services and guards, to allow the order a lot of freedom and high standing inside the kingdom.

Recruitment

There are only two ways of joining, you are either born as a 'Child of the Order', who gets officially adopted and raised by the organization, or you are a magically gifted child of a member, who introduces you to the order at a young age.

Emblem & Identification

A S and O shaped like a drop of blood. The Sanguine Protectors have an additional simple ripple below it, the outer line baring spike like thorns.   All magically gifted were branded by the order to make sure no arcane casters are roaming Ederaa without means of identification. The brand is most commonly placed on the inner lower arm above the wrist. Today it is most common to tattoo the emblem instead, which results in a lot cleaner and less painful work.

Other Facts

Barely any adopted children by the order have a last name, instead they will earn a nick name / title which they will carry with honor.
