Triton
Tritons, also known as merfolk, are a race of fish-like people that primarily live in water, although they are capable of surviving on land.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The upper body of a triton is humanoid in shape, while the lower body resembles some sort of aquatic creature, like a fish or a squid. Aside from these basics, triton anatomy is quite variable. Their lower bodies are typically scaled, and these scales sometimes continue up their sides and their arms. On their heads, tritons sometimes have hair-like tentacles, which can vary wildly in size and number.
They have a minor connection to Magic, allowing their lower bodies to shapeshift into humanoid legs when not submerged.
There are several different types of triton, each specialized for a different role in society:
- Pallan - A shark-like variety of triton, with clawed hands and long, almost daggerlike fangs. Their grip and bite strength are both sufficient to pierce steel armor. Their scales are large and quite thick, forming a natural armor over their entire arms up to the shoulder, as well as over their sides, back, and tail. Pallans are the main warrior class of triton society.
- Rhodo - A shrimp-like type of triton. They have four arms and are naturally quite muscular. Their scales are large and thick enough to form a sort of shell around the tail. These scales are also present on their hands. Rhodos are the main laborers of triton society, and are also capable in combat. Additionally, they occasionally shed their scales, which the tritons use like metal.
- Sikyme - An eel-like type of triton. Their tails are prehensile and extremely long, usually being at least twice as long as their torsos. Along the tail are bioluminescent nodules, which can generate bursts of electricity. They have scales, but they're so small that they're difficult to distinguish from flesh. Sikymes tend to be quite slim, but deceptively strong. They can secrete a type of mucus across their body, becoming quite slippery. This mucus is a great conductor of electricity. Sikymes serve as law enforcement and prison guards.
- Kyman - A squid-like type of triton, with a multitude of scaled tentacles for a lower body. Their scales are quite small and soft. They can expel an ink-like substance from their tentacles, and can also change the color of their skin and scales at will. Kymans serve as spies and assassins.
- Salach - A seahorse-like type of triton. Their tails are well-armored and prehensile. Salachs are the nobility of Triton society.
- Callis - A fish-like triton, these have an unusually human-like appearance. Their skin is similar to that of a human, and when not submerged, they have no visible scales. They can survive without water twice as long as other tritons. They also have hair like humans, which no other Tritons do. They are known for having naturally beautiful singing voices. Unlike the others, Callises don't have a clear role in triton society, as they aren't full-blooded tritons. They're the result of Tritons breeding with Humans. They've been known to work as entertainers and also as spies on the surface.
Genetics and Reproduction
Tritons reproduce sexually and are oviparous. Their incubation period is eight months.
Growth Rate & Stages
For the first five years of a triton hatchling's life, they resemble a regular sea creature, with no humanoid features. During this period, they cannot survive out of water. After reaching the age of five, these features begin to develop, finishing in about a year. From then on, they grow similarly to other races.
Ecology and Habitats
Tritons primarily live underwater. They can survive on land, but must come in contact with water for an extended period of time at least once per fortnight, otherwise they will slowly die.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Each type of Triton (save for Callises), have particular roles in society. They aren't confined to these roles, but are expected to be capable of performing them well when needed.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Almost all Tritons are found in the Halian Sea.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Tritons have an exceptional sense of smell, good sense of taste, and are otherwise average. They have an exceptional ability to see in the dark. They also have the ability to detect nearby electricity, and if they focus, they can use this to detect nearby living creatures.
Civilization and Culture
History
Tritons originally inhabited the sea around Aevorea, but were driven out by the monsters created by The Fjandi. Nowadays, tritons primarily live in the Halian Sea, which is free of monsters.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Many of the land-dwelling races assume that tritons eating fish would be akin to cannibalism. Tritons generally consider this idea to be ridiculous.
