Moonfall
Moonfall is a small town located on the north bank of the Odungarn in the Stormlands region of the Kingdom of Elysia. It is a notable waypoint for anyone crossing the bay and anyone traveling anywhere along the coast of the Storm Reaches .
Demographics
The great majority of Moonfall's residents, about 900 are human. There also live there about 100 each dwarves and elf-kin and 100 or so more of numerous other ancestries.
Most of the town's residents are poor but none are destitute. They generally get by, though just barely as fishermen on the Odungarn. Rumors small deposits of the semiprecious ornamental mineral azurite come in and out of fashion from time to time and there is usually a small mining operation or two living there hoping to cash in. A small portion of the population engages in the trade of outfitting and supplying travelers and these are Moonfall's most well to do citizens.
Government
Moonfall is beholden to the Throne of Storms but it is too small and too remote to support the traditional government structure of the kingdom. Like most remote settlements throughout the Eldess Kingdoms, it is thusly ruled by some local, usually called "Earl" who's either been granted or taken rule of the town and surrounding area. And, so long as the town pays its tax when the Crown's marshals come by, the're usually left alone. So, how much each Earl shares rule with those they rule varies from place to place.
The current ruler of Moonfall is a gregarious and affable, albeit vulgar human man named Dane Magnus.
Industry & Trade
The bulk of Moonfall's commerce is derived from two trades, fishing and travel.
The Odungarn is a bountiful waterway and all manner of fish can be had up and down its length. Moonfall is well-positioned about midway between the Stormfalls River delta and the open sea. Fishermen can sail further inland to fish for striped bass, trout, and even salmon when in season. Near the town and heading towards the sea, the bass get larger and haddock are also sometimes seen. Where the bay meets the seas, the sailing is difficult and dangerous but the bounty is great. Haddock and pollock abound as does cod. And those willing to brave the open waters of the appropriately named Sea of Storms, tuna and various species of sailfins.
On the travel side of commerce, Moonfall's geographic location make it a valuable waypoint for anyone traveling in the region. The remoteness of the Storm Reaches means this is not many but it's still enough for a couple of merchants in the small town to make their living in steerage equipment, roadside and camping supplies, and other various sundries required for lengthy overland or even waterborne travel.
Infrastructure
- Moonfall proper is surrounded by a stone wall and battlements. Six stone towers and three land-accessible gates are incorporated into the the town's wall fortifications. A fourth gate; the River Gate straddles the waterway along the northern stretch of the town's wall.
- Five bridges cross the Moon March River that Moonfall is built around. Three of these are within the town itself. The other two are north of the town, one still within site of its walls and the other about three miles north of that.
- The streets and byways of Moonfall are constructed of crushed stone and these are similarly built up along the three roadways that head from the city in East, West, and Northerly directions.
- Moonfall's harbor is its lifesblood. Most of it is icelocked during the winter months and before and after these. However, three permanent piers were constructed in such a way that they persist even in the deepest cold of winter and the freezing of the bay that it brings.
Guilds and Factions
Moonfall's size keeps it from hosting official outposts of the larger guilds seen throughout the Eldess Kingdoms and beyond. However, a couple of these still have a presence in the town.
- The proprietor of Harbek's Sundries, a dwarf named Harbek Goldhammer is a well-known operative of the Stormhold Blades guild of sellswords. And though he is semi-retired, he still maintains open lines of communication with the guild's house in the nearby capital and beyond. Operating out of his shop, he even acts in an official capacity for the guild when requested.
- Though it's not discussed in open conversation, it's widely accepted that the Crimson Hoods have operatives in Moonfall.
