End of the Eldessyr Dynasty

The tenuous status quo that King Alfred was able to secure in the decade following the end of the Horde Wars faced its greatest challenges to present a decade and a half after the signing of the Treaty of the Dale. First, what at first appeared to be a local imbroglio; a turf war between rival rogue gangs in Westport was revealed to be much more after the fact. The turf war was put down with relative ease by a small group of heroes. However, in the ensuing investigations by numerous magisters revealed that there was much more to the whole affair.   None other than the Lord High Magister himself, the Honorable Sir Josef Patteress uncovered evidence during his investigation of the affair that the whole business may have disguised a secret plot to overthrow the King and seize the throne of Elysia. The reason for the attempted coup was never discovered because the evidence of the treachery did not meet the high standards of Eldess justice. However, given who was implicated, it was likely as simple as one powerful noble house's attempt to seize power from another on.   When the dust settled after these events, the so-called "second house of Elysia", Huus Goldenhart lost some of its prestige. A long-standing rivalry between its patriarch, Lord Andrey Goldenheart and his cousin, the Lord of Westport, Lady Alana Kateri was also finally settled in the Lady's favor. Lady Kateri's hold on the reigns of power in Westport had been tennous for the entire decade and a half since the previous Lord, her father's untimely death on the battlefield.   Andrey's claim to rulership over Elysia's largest city was very valid. Huus Goldenhart had ruled Westport for hundreds of years before his uncle made the controversial decision to tap his daughter to succeed him instead of the oldest male member of the family at the time, Andrey's father. Power would have naturally passed to Andrey once his father died and his resentment for his cousin was thusly well known. That all went away after the investigation following the Westport gang war in 13-14 AC.   Less than two years later, it seemed that the old rivalry would resurface when tragedy struck the monarchy. King Alfred's only child, Crown Prince Sir Alavan Johan Eldessyr was killed in a freak hunting accident. King Alfred was devastated and many feared he would succumb to his own grief. More importantly though, there was no clear heir to the throne. Alfred was himself an only child and so was his father, King Joffin Eldessyr, second of his name. There were some cousins but their understanding of power and governance were as distant as their relation to the King.   Alfred did recover some and it was said that he began to wonder if his son's death was part of another attempt to usurp him. He called for an extensive investigation. His fears were unfounded, however. Even the royal court's Magister uncovered nothing but evidence of a very unfortunate fall.   The King came to accept the fact that on top of the tragedy, he now had a huge problem on his hands. No matter what choice he made for his successor, there would be a substantial group of the powerful and influential that would not be happy as a result. Alfred turned to his closest friends and advisors for counsel. Among them were his old friends, the brothers Jeff and Josef Patteress, Lord High Marshall and Magister of Elysia, respectively.   The Lord of the "House of the Devoted" and his younger brother were unwavering in their counsel to King Alfred that he name one of his cousins as successor. They knew, as he did, that naming another was problematic and could lead to division and disunion throughout the kingdom. But Alfred was hearing none of it.   King Alfred could not countenance the idea of some distant relative of his taking the reigns completely bereft of the knowhow it would take to keep Elysia united for very long. And, even though no evidence was found to definitively connect Lord Goldenhart to the coup attempt a couple of years earlier, Alfred could not imagine elevating the so-called Second House of Elysia to the throne. On this point at least, all of his advisors agreed.   One councilor that the King kept very close to the vest was the lady ruler of Westport; Alana Kateri. The King's opinion of the Lord of Westport could only be described as "complicated". Alana's defiance of the King's edicts during the Horde Wars might suggest otherwise but Alfred could not deny that he respected Alana for her strength in the face of his poorly-argued pronouncements pertaining to Elysia's place in the wars. Her insistence that Elysia aid her oldest friends in such a time of need were proven prescient.   Following the great conflict, Alana and King Alfred settled their differences. Her support of the Elysian throne never wavered. So much so that she was tireless in her efforts to keep her fellow Lords of the Southlands and even along the Southern Tier in line with Westport's loyalty to the crown. This loyalty was especially challenged in the aftermath of the events of 13-14 AC, yet it never wavered. So, when Alfred sought Lady Alana's counsel on the subject of succession, her assertion was that she would support his choice so long as it was someone he trusted more than someone he felt compelled to name by tradition.   Early in the winter of 16 AC, deep in winter, King Alfred of Elysia, fifth of his name, became very ill. Fast approaching completion of his eighth decade of life, nature was taking its course. Alfred was dying but he was at peace. Early on the morning of 28 Warming, he called for his closest friends and councilors. As they stood around his bedside, Alfred proclaimed that Lord Jefford Patteress would become Regent of Elysia upon his death and that the new regent's first charge was to name the next King or Queen of Elysia.   Lord Patteress was in shock as a results of the events of that morning. So much so that his protestations for his liege's decisions would not form at first. And, by the time that he did steele his resolve, it was too late. Before the sun rose the following day, 29 Warming, 16 AC, King Alfred died. The dynasty of Huus Eldessyr of Elysia passed from existence.
