Nome of the Iron Hills

East of the Nome of the Skyward Ridge lie the rugged highlands known as the Iron Hills, long home to the capital city of the Mountain Dwarfs of central Caino: Karrakha; the Iron Spike. While this imposing pinnacle of stone and steel stands as an impregnable monument to dwarvern craft and power, it has always been home to a surprisingly small number of actual dwarfs, instead serving as a place of trade and diplomacy, as well as the meeting place of the Kha-Ri (Iron Kings) of the great kingdom of Skystone, which stretches far beneath the Peaks into territory contested by Kobolds, Gnomes and Goblins in a complex web of alliances and feuds, utterly invisible to the surface world.
Skystone is ruled by six mountain dwarf houses, five – including the high house of Ironfist – claiming desent from the Greystone line (the sixth, the House of Earthstar, from Mottlestone.) Due to this ancestry, the kingdom bears a long enmity towards the Freehold of Darkmount, whose stubborn independence and pride in their Adamant heritage has prevented a final unification of the mountains under Greystone rule. Some blame this division, and the incorporation of Darkmount into the Nome of the Storm's Eye, for the fact that the Iron Hills felt it necessary to accede to the advances of Federation diplomats in CY14.7 instead of remaining independent. Other whisper that, had they not done so, the kobolds and gnomes would have, bringing the dwarfs into conflict with the Federation.
The Kha-Ri of the five lesser houses these are now federal electors of the nome, alongside the Stonesingers (high priests) of the divine ancestors Greystone and Mottlestone. The Kha-Ri Ironfist, meanwhile, holds the office of nomarch, as well as being Kha-Rikha of the kingdom.
