Astrid Sondell

The only daughter of the famed warrior king, Vanar Sondell, acting as both a well known shield maiden and royal huscarl, defending her father from assassins or possible challengers. Because of her age, she is not quite as well renowned as her brothers when it comes to her reputation, but is well on her way, being further proof that Vanar's bloodline produces some of the most killed warriors in all of The Valkan Isles. Many state that she may very well be the next, great shield maiden of the Isles, eventually placing her name up with her brothers while earning her place in The Halls of Vuldrunn.

A Reputation to Live Up to

Astrid lived through her childhood admiring her brothers, idolising the eldest sibling, Algar, practically being raised by him more so than her father. Although all siblings were close, with Algar and Eyvald being the best of friends while Eyvald did his best to keep Grimar out of trouble, none quite had the bond that these two had. Astrid never hid a thing from Algar, expressing her ambition to be a warrior just like him after he slew the griffin in his early adolescence, beginning her training to become the skilled shield maiden that she is known to be today.  

Losing her Idol

Astrid had only begun to show glimpses of the warrior she would become when Algar decided to free the slaves held in the Isles, betraying his people. Astrid and Eyvald were sent to the docks to stop his escape while Grimar was to intercept him in the city. Algar would defeat his brother, encountering the two in the docks. In a pained rage, unable to comprehend that the person she was closest to was willing to leave everything behind, she was ready to end him, only to be stopped by Eyvald, telling her that, no matter what Algar has done, he would not fight family, and that she would die if she were to fight him alone. Seeing sense in his words, the two backed off, allowing Algar to flee the Isles.
This event became an even greater driving force for Astrid, telling herself that, if she were to ever see Algar again, she would end him herself. She held contempt for her eldest brother, matched by only her father, still unable to come to terms with the bond she had with him being broken without her say. This shared contempt made her closer with her father, agreeing to be the King's personal huscarl (bodyguard) until she felt that she was ready to go to foreign shores, raiding and conquering against Valka's enemies.
