The book talks about how the different types of magic are derived from manipulating differing parts of
The Script which are said to be the very fibers that make up the rules of the world. Different sections of the script were put in by different primordials, so manipulating differing sections of the Script allow for differing uses of magic, and the seven schools of magic represent the supposed seven sections of the script.
The book also speaks about how Saol, the first mortal, was the first to manipulate the script, with the aid of the Lesser Gods, who have been able to add to the script since their creation, also making him the first arcane user. Because the Lesser Gods were able to open the script so that mortals could manipulate it, users of the arcane have been able to exist; however, they are restricted by their mortality, as manipulation of the Script is taxing on the body, meaning that you have to be trained to manipulate it at greater levels, thus casting greater spells.
Finally, Aldin speaks about the sectioning of magic spells into 10 levels, as that is what can currently be accessed by mortals. The spells are put into these levels based on how much strain they put on the body, with level 1 spells putting minimal strain on the body, but level 9 spells put dramatic strain on the body, which many mortals may not ever be able to handle. Cantrips are spells that put such a small strain on your body as an arcane conduit, that they can easily be used without limit, as the Script is hardly manipulated to do so. It is said that even the greatest mages in
The Continent are only able to cast spells at the 7th level, which is seen as the limit of many mortals, and Aldin states that he knows of only two mortals capable of casting spells at 9th level, the limit of mortals. Himself, and
Faenor Anari-Fellon.
