The Slumbering Dragon
Despite their reputation, ever since The Divine Exodus and the Salardian War between dragons and giants, many do not speak of dragons in tales or myths, as their prominence has begun to fade. Dragonborn are a reasonably common occurrence, yes, but they lack the majesty of a true dragon. One who's wings could bloat out the light of the sky when in full flight. One's who's scales are stronger than any armor. One that is a true master of the arcane arts. One that could rend very armies of mortals with little effort. There is one tale that has caught the attention of many, becoming a somewhat popular folk tale for many. The tale of The Slumbering Dragon.
Summary
The tale speaks of Rahimus, a dragon of sapphire scales, eternally loyal to the heir of Dranocast. The tale itself says that he fought with the heir during the Salardian War, growing more and more loyal to him as the war endured, sticking by him in spite of all the horrors they saw. In time, the heir went missing from the world, never to be seen again. Loyal to the heir, and not the current Ruler of Dranocast, Rahimus travelled the world in search of him, but was unable to find him.
After the search failed to bear fruit, Rahimus, trusting in the heir completely, discovered a cave that would hold him in time, freezing him into a sleep that he would wake from when the heir would come to find him instead. Taking with him the treasure of the heir, including evidence the heir is who they say they are, Rahimus begun his slumber, resting upon the mound of treasure, becoming the Slumbering Dragon.
Historical Basis
There is little evidence that the story is a true one, given how historians cannot agree on who the heir is meant to be. There are some that believe Lord Urill-ith to be the heir, as he is the heir of Pyra, the First Dragon, given that he was not the ruler of Dranocast as the time. If this were the case, it is strange that he would need proof that he is the heir and he never went missing from the world. Others argue it could be Icinder, the Fallen Dragon, as he did die, vanishing from the world. He could return, and would be the heir to his elder brother, Uril-ith, meaning Rahimus would be an ally of his.
Cultural Reception
Many celebrate this story in the new year, as that is when the Salardian War ended, using it to remember a world with the divine. Alderhardt, Knaeva and The Tirmari Archipelago are such places that celebrate the story, using the symbol of the Slumbering Dragon to represent it, often selling medallions or decorative pieces of it in the new year.
