Chinvat Bridge
The Chinvat Bridge or Bridge of Judgement is located between Hammistagān and the heavens in the House of Song, spanning a chasm over deeper levels of Duzak.
See the Death, Dying, and Resurrection article for what happens to the soul at the time of death.
After the soul arrives in Hammistagān and passes through Maleke Khalagh's realm, it comes finally to Chinvat Bridge, the last barrier and most significant trial before entry to the heavens. Here, two Sagdid guard the entrance to the bridge, welcoming souls they approve of and defending the way from those they don't. One can expect as well to be greeted here by the Angel Daena, and the Angel Suroosh. Daena's representation, it is said, is a reflection one's conscience. If one had lived a good life, Daena is a beautiful maiden; if one had followed the lies of darkness, she is an ugly hag. This coterie, having weighed the soul in the previous three days, either guards it from Daeva such as Aesma Daeva, Asto Vidatu, Vizaresha who seek to drag it off the bridge into hell, or themselves act to thrust a dark soul down into the lower levels of Duzak. The condemned soul is easily caught in the lasso of the daeva and taken.
As Daena comforts the soul, and Suroosh guide and protect it, the bridge itself will expand and become easy to cross for the justified soul, but for the condemned, it will narrow to the breadth of a wicked blade spaning a hellish chasm. As one nears the House of Song, the paridise beyone becomes visible.
"Then there comes before you on the way the form of a cow, fat and full of milk, from which happiness and sweetness call you. There comes a garden full of fresh fruits, full of clean water, full of dried fruits, and full of fertility, from which come joyous and happy thoughts for you."Those not completely evil, and who manange to traverse Chinvat Bridge, arrive before Mithra, god of covenants and contracts, and a guardian of the Heavens. The verdict on the soul's life is read and to them the gates of the paradises in the House of Song are opened.
