High Presbyter
High Priest of Jerain
The High Presbyter is the head of the Council of the Enlightened that leads the Trijan Church of Jerain, the southern division of Trijan faith known as the Church. Though many compare the title to the Ponti of the northern division of the faith, the High Presbyter does not have the absolute authority held by the Ponti. The High Presbyter is merely an equal among peers in the Council, holding only a single vote, as any other member. His only true power comes from his veto and tie-breaking powers in Council votes. In addtion his role as liaison for the Council to the royal family of Kingdom of Marras gives him unofficial political power, however.
To become High Presbyter one must be male, as all Presbyter are, married and a current member of the Council of Enlightenment. Once elected the position is held for life (read farther for an exception to this). The High Presbyter's wife is to be included as a co-head of the Council. Though no voting powers of her own, her opinion is taken in consideration by both her husband and the Council. She can seat in as proxy to her husband if he is unavailable. The only female with this honor. Should the High Presbyter's wife die, or they divorce, he must step down as leader of the Council. In southern Trijan belief a true leader is a faithfully married man. The figurehead leader of the Church must be an example to the faithful.
