Silver
the Metal of Barter
Silver's discovery is lost to history, having been in use since the prehistoric periods. Even in its earliest days this natural occurring metal was used as a primitive form of currency, replacing the barter system that was widespread in the beginning of history. Used concurrently with metals like Copper and Gold, silver's low structural strength meant it was ill fit for tools, and quickly became an ornamental metal, shifting from there to a tradable commodity. As time passed, this barterable material shifted into a standardized currency for trade. Several ancient clay tablets have been found across Novyum with early records for trabable goods and their equivalent in value to the weight of silver.
The widespread use of the Silver Piece by the Capedian in their trade networks shifted the metal from a weight value to a token equaling a value in weight, standardizing a monetary system. This Capedian system of coin value was so pervasive by the rise of Lakorth it became, and has remained, a staple of every economy on Ethae and spreading to Dergonhad since then.
Silver mines can be found worldwide. The silver trade is one of the largest global networks on Aldern.
