Dracospears

The Dracospears are an order of dragon-riding knights who serve Emperor Stratos and the Stratian Empire. After the rebellion against the chromatic dragons, powerful spells were cast which have allowed the people of the Stratian Empire to somewhat tame their former oppressors. It is the sworn duty of all Dracospears to use their power to protect their emperor and country, and many have also been granted the title of legate.

Structure

On rare occasion, when a military officer, legate, or even a common citizen distinguishes themselves with feats of great bravery, incredible strength, or clever tactics, that individual may be called to Rubholth for a private audience with Emperor Stratos. If the emperor deems the individual worthy, they may be presented with the opportunity to join the Dracospears. At this point, the young knight is presented to a trove of eggs which have been enchanted not to hatch until they encounter the knight destined to bond with them. If an egg hatches, then the knight joins the order as a full-fledged Dracospear. Otherwise, they may simply be inducted as honorary members of the order. Some full-fledged members look down on these honorary members, but it is still considered a great honor. Regardless of whether an egg hatches for the knight, each Dracospear is also allowed to select a squadron of wyvern knights to command.
Within the Dracospears, the hierarchy of the order is largely based on time served. The more tenure a member has, the more pull they have within the group. However, another factor that determines a Dracospear's rank is the color of their dragon, but there are numerous exceptions to the order of colors, such as dragons of rare colors (from lowest rank to highest: white, black, green, blue, red).

Culture

The first loyalty of the Dracospears belongs to Emperor Stratos. While some legates would have their citizens believe otherwise, in truth only the emperor has the authority to order the Dracospears to do anything. This is perhaps the reason for the great difference in beliefs, temperaments, creeds, and worldviews of those within the Dracospears, and is also the reason why the most powerful of the Wyrmblessed States are led by legates who are also members of the order.

History

The Dracospears were founded by Emperor Stratos at the same time as the the Stratian Empire. They were intended to be the country's greatest weapon against dragons and other tyrants who may seek to take freedom from the people of the land again. Many of the heroes who fought along Emperor Stratos were inducted into the order at its founding, and to this day it is considered one of the greatest honors a citizen of the empire may receive.

Ours are the first spears our enemies see, and ours is the last fire they ever feel.
