Reckoning of Hell

The Reckoning of Hell was the single largest uprising against the power of Asmodeus that the Nine Hells has ever seen. It shook the plane to its roots and forever changed its political landscape.

The Conflict

Prelude

While the Reckoning of Hell was really a culmination of a multitude of individual conflicts between the archdevils, the event scholars attribute as the tipping point was the murder of Bensozia, the consort of Asmodeus and the mother of Glasya. One of Asmodeus's lieutenants witnessed the murder and identified the culprit as Levistus, who was apparently enraged that Bensozia would not turn against Asmodeus with him. For his crimes, Levistus was frozen in an impenetrable block of ice and the title of archduke was stripped from him and given to Geryon. Around this time, Glasya was sent to the fetid swamps of Minauros to serve in the court of Mammon.

Aftermath

The fallout for the Reckoning of Hell was great, with each archdevil being punished as Asmodeus saw fit.

• Baalzebul once ruled both Malbolge and Maladomini, though he allowed Moloch to rule Malbolge as a proxy. After the Reckoning, Asmodeus took Malbolge from him and transformed him into a cursed slug-like creature. He was, however, allowed to retain his rule over Maladomini.
• Bel was put under the watchful eyes of the Dark Eight, effectively taking control over the Blood War from him.
• Moloch, who was defiant until the last because of some bad council from Malagard, was banished from the Nine Hells entirely. Rulership over Malbolge passed to Malagard.
• Belial's daughter Fierna was raised to archduke status and allowed to rule the layer alongside her father.
• Mammon was the first to turn tail and flee before Asmodeus, and as such was spared serious punishment.
• Geryon betrayed his allies to Asmodeus in a show of devotion unprecedented among archdevils, and as a cruel punishment for his betraying the trust of his allies, Asmodeus reinstated Levistus as the ruler of Stygia.
• Dispater and Mephistopheles somehow managed to escape punishment entirely
