Reiko Arakawa

Reiko is a novelist hailing from the Elderhaven Reaches. Her works marked a break from some of the underlying principles of the nascent arti-fiction genre. Rather than base her stories on the principles of artificing, her novels remain rooted in the spiritual and animist traditions of her homeland. These "soft" a-f novels, as the burgeoning subgenre she founded came to be known, are less concerned with what might be practical, and seek to imagine how life on Alen'dal might interact with strange new species from the realms beyond the stars. She images fantastical new peoples on otherworldly lands, and is skilled at both imagining and conveying the ways in which their outlooks on life, the world, and the gods might differ from our own. These differences are the chief drivers of the conflicts of her books--which, as scholars have noted, is a veiled commentary on how the peoples of Alen'dal come into friction with each other in a world where long-distance travel is growing more commonplace.   Her major works include:
  • A Ship to Otherland
  • Dreams Beyond the Bubble
  • World-Spirit
  • The Distance to My Neighbors
