Albedo T'wan (ahl-bay-doe-too-wan)

Wulvenscar monk and member of Hexblade

Albedo T'wan, of the Wulvenscar (a.k.a. Mark ShoeStain)

"I'm uh... Mark... Shoestain."
— Albedo lying about his identity to a townsguard

Albedo T'wan (formerly known as A02-001) is a sentient Warforged who deserted the warfront due to the realization of the horrors and atrocities he has committed because of his gained sentience. Currently, he resides with an adventuring party called Hexblade and is living life under a mask; seeking to find a life far away from his past.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Albedo stands six feet tall and has a slender frame with a lithe, athletic physique. Due to being a Warforged, he is resistant to all forms of poisonous effects and cannot be put to sleep by magical means. When he disguises himself as a human, he appears to be the same height and physique.

Body Features

When examining Albedo's Warforged body, it is evident that he is an inorganic being. This is evident by the emerald green, metallic exterior he has instead of skin. There are also areas in his body where something can properly fit in but is currently removed, inferring that Albedo may have removed some extensions of his Warforged body prior. The metallic armor that his entire body is made of is called allunite steel—a material comprised of metals like copper, iron, and silver mixed with concentrated doses of allunite ore ground up into a powder. The material is said to be nigh indestructible, allowing Warforged to survive in the harshest of conditions. However, their power sources are not made of the same material, and it is possible to slay Albedo if his power source is compromised.

Facial Features

Warforged faces all seem alike, especially those done in the same manufacturing process; with the purpose of their creation, they were meant to intimidate and strike fear in the hearts of their enemies. Albedo is no such exception. With a stern look with dark glowing eyes, his facial features were dark, brooding, and generally intimidating. Whenever A02 assumes control, his eyes glow a bright shade of red, presenting himself in a more dangerous light. When using magic to alter his appearance, Albedo adorns a red-headed human male riddled with scars and a burn mark that covers a third of his head. He did this unconsciously at first but decided to keep it as a representation of his broken self.

Physical quirks

Albedo is able to alter his voice transmitters so that he may be able to speak clearly without the presence of a robotic filter clouding his speech pattern. It is newly developed tech specifically for the line of his model. A02, however, speaks in this deep, raspy voice with the heavy robotic filter, their voice transmitter's normal setting.

Special abilities

Albedo possesses the ability to summon magical appendages of hard light, known as his Astral arms. He gained this ability when he trained with the Wulvenscar clan, who helped him in unlocking that untapped potential from within him. Using these arms, he is able to deal magical damage to his opponents as well as extend his reach against opponents from afar. Upon the waking of A02 as a second personality, Albedo found himself being able to tap into an old power that was slightly familiar to him. Using the pent-up rage that emanates from A02, he is able to invoke a flurry of intense emotions that result in him being able to cast random, chaotic magical effects. How these abilities emerged, they are not sure, but they speculate it had something to do with the Luxon core that powers both of them.

Apparel & Accessories

Albedo often wears bandages that cover his body to hide his inorganic appearance. He completes this look by wearing loose clothes, a hood, and various masks to represent who he is at any given moment. On his metallic-plated chest, Albedo has a tattoo of a jet-black hue, which depicts a masquerade mask with tendrils covering one side of it.

Personal history

"My name... is Albedo... Albedo T'wan."
— Albedo introduces himself
Background

Made as a weapon for war, A02-001 (or simply A02) was sent to the warzone to fight for Geneva's cause. In those years when he was an active soldier on duty, A02 has known nothing but war and bloodshed, killing various ethnic races to further the goals of the ones who created him. As a Warforged, he knew nothing of personal feelings or emotions that would constitute one who possesses a soul, only his programmed directive: annihilating the Concord's enemies.

However, after some four years of fighting, a voice within him started questioning their purpose and existence. It was akin to a mortal conscience, a gnawing feeling that would haunt him for days. It grew stronger and stronger the more lives A02 took until one day, that voice encompassed the Warforged and sprung forth new life: the birth of Albedo T'wan.

With that, he gained the concept of sentience and broke free from his rigid programming. After the haunting realization of the horrors of war and the atrocities he has committed - the recently sentient being was completely overwhelmed; a rush of emotions flooded his simple mind. Albedo fled the battlefield in a manic haze of panic and hid up north, running away from war's hellscape.

Becoming Albedo

Wandering alone, he slowly tore away at the weapons of war he was adorned with in disgust and regret, newfound emotions that he is still reeling from. Fearing that one might recognize what he was, he veered away from civilization and decided to venture into the mountains, where he could be left to his own devices. He grew weaker by the day as he had no time to rest. Dangers like monsters and beasts could be lurking anywhere, waiting for the opportunity to strike.

That fear consumed him—yet another new emotion bombarded his already overwhelmed mental state. The toll it took on his mind profusely shattered his overall health. Albedo believed he would die on that mountain and was on the verge of passing out due to exhaustion. But before he could, he decided that he could not bear the thought of his history, so he ripped out one of his memory cores and forced his data to reboot, virtually wiping away memories of his old self.

When he regained consciousness, he found himself on a cot; a feline creature beside him; and surprisingly, alive. When the feline asked for his name, Albedo fell silent for a while, unable to remember a name; but eventually introduced himself. Albedo could have sworn he heard a growl in the deeper recesses of his mind but ultimately decided to ignore it, putting it off as a side effect of his amnesia. The feline creature who sat beside him introduced herself as Jezerel Greyfur, a leonin of the Wulvenscar clan. He was introduced to the place; a community filled with a diversity of mortal races who accepted and nursed him back to full health. He stayed for about two years under the care of this tribal clan and soon after became an honorary member.

Gender Identity

Albedo and A02 both identify as non-binary and do not care for pronouns, but they dislike being identified as 'it'.

Sexuality

Albedo is still working out the intricacies of mortal attraction, but has found that he is mostly attracted to anyone he fancies. The race, gender or creed did not matter, as long as the Warforged found them interesting. A02 is asexual.

Education

Training with the Wulvenscar

Under the tutelage of a Leonin master, named Jezerel Greyfur, Albedo trained under the ways of the monks of the Wulvenscar clan. He developed various martial arts techniques during his time with them and learned quickly due to the nature of his Warforged programming. It was almost as if his previous combat experience in the war gave him an edge in learning new ways of fighting. But this time, it felt different because his motivations have changed. He was also taught the clan's cultural tenets and monastic creed of non-violence.

Employment

Wulvenscar

After many weeks with the clan, Albedo was given an insignia of the Wulvenscar, symbolizing that he was now an official clan member. Although he was still young and inexperienced and had not officially been given tasks, Albedo believed he'd get there someday. But at the end of his stay, a certain event came to light at the summit where the clan had temporarily stayed. One of their scouts found a famished and near-death individual at the base of one of the mountain ranges bordering their location.

Soon after, when the individual came to, he introduced himself as Moksha; a Solarii tiefling. He told them that he was a man finding answers to mysteries that he could not comprehend. Moksha stayed with Albedo and the Wulvenscar for a while and developed a rapport. After a few more weeks of Moksha's recuperation, Albedo started to remember pieces of his memory as they slowly reformed into cohesive, trauma-filled images of death and war. And as fate seemed eager to nudge history forward, Moksha received a letter from an old friend to resolve his problems. Albedo saw this as an opportunity to help a friend and journey to find himself. He confessed such feelings to his master, Jezerel, to which she agreed and officially gave him his first mission as a member of the Wulvenscar clan - to help Moksha in his troubles.

Hexblade

After a few more weeks, he would meet the concurrent members of his adventuring party, Hexblade. In a tavern, they met the traveling fairy bard, Aine. And when he was employed by Ymla of the Dawnguard for his first ever quest, he met J'ando Ghor'bash and Rooke Mistral as fellow party members of Ymla's group. Not long after, they met another traveling bard named Rodevir Larrenfinst. They would all come together to form the adventuring party, Hexblade, after agreeing that they worked well together and could support each other in their goals.

Accomplishments & Achievements

One of Albedo's greatest achievements was successfully becoming an official member of the Wulvenscar, finishing his martial arts training embodying many new virtues from the clan. He wanted to prove himself to help Jezerel's tribe and return the favor to his master. Moreover, as a personal achievement, he has also made some friends: namely, Arland and the members of Hexblade. It is a small goal he set out on his journey to live as someone normal.

Failures & Embarrassments

As of his adventures, Albedo has presumably gotten a man incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. When Albedo brought the allunite steel they looted from the Sanctum of the Omnipotent One to the blacksmith, he was unaware that the sale or possession of such a thing was illegal within the borders of the Concord. This led to the local blacksmith (Arland's father) being arrested and taken to the capital to explain the wrongful possession. Due to this, Albedo wishes to travel to the capital post-haste to help acquit the blacksmith.

Albedo also fears that the memories that resurface within him are true. To think that he used to be a murderer and a propagated the genocide of many races; it would break him to accept it. However, when A02 spoke with him, this confirmed his suspicions and in time, he accepted the harsh reality of his past. While the atrocities were harsh, Albedo found the truth quite elating, seeing as he had found an old part of himself. However, since the reality of it was dark, Albedo thinks that he should atone for what he's done. Through this second life, he wants people to see that Warforged are not the monsters of war people tell their children to scare them to sleep. That they can be repurposed to something that does not take life.

Mental Trauma

A02-001

“Albedo T’wan? Is that the name you’ve given yourself? To hide your memories… to run away from your past. You cannot hide from what lies inside. Sooner or later, your truth will resurface. And I am that truth. Thou art I… and I am thou. We are both one and the same.
— Albedo first meets A02 inside his own mind
Albedo suffers from a split personality disorder. The exact number of personas hasn't been verified. However, he is aware of the existence of one. Speaking from the point of retrospect, the personality revealed itself to be named A02 and claimed to be the original consciousness before Albedo inhabited his current body.

A02 identifies as a Warforged of pure, unfettered power. He is known to be a ruthless, cruel, prideful, ambitious, and vitriolic person who solves his problems with violence and acts as the complete opposite of Albedo, who practices non-violence and compassion for others. The two battle control over the body at times, but it seems that Albedo is the dominant personality and is mostly in control of the body; while A02 is the repressed personality and is only allowed to resurface whenever Albedo allows it.

It can be said that A02 is a reflection of Albedo's past—a ruthless soldier forged from war. The two have had personal conflicts with each other due to A02 insulting and criticizing him for running away from his past and not accepting the reality of the situation he was dealing with. A02 views Albedo as weak, reprehensible, and a shell of his former self. But despite this, the former personality has shown a side to him in which he cares about the well-being of Albedo to an extent.

This is evident in his dialogues of encouraging Albedo to stray back into the path of power and allowing him (A02) to take control at times. A02 has shown that he respects power above all else, which is why he is quite interested in Albedo's newfound potential, like his Astral Self and the various magical abilities borne from their Luxon. He is also a prideful personality who likes to flaunt his Warforged heritage whenever possible. He loathes that Albedo would rather hide his identity than use it to gain power or strike fear in others. In that vein, he also has a belief that Warforged are new-age mortals who can surpass, in his words, 'the filthy mortal races of this plane.' He sees all mortals beneath the Warforged because of their inorganic disabilities.

Whenever Albedo allows A02 to take control over their body, their fighting stances change. While Albedo's attacks are graceful, acrobatic, and reserved, A02's strikes are wild, reckless, violent, and bridled with the intent to kill. The combat style is described to be a mixture of Albedo's own acrobatic, monk-like flow but warped in a way that he moves like a berserking warrior. The shift in personality is also clear as A02's attacks are rage-filled and violent, unafraid to hurt or maim his opponent.

Fears

Due to his questioning of their existence, Albedo has a fear of being meaningless. Already struggling with his own purpose in life, he is on a never-ending quest to find his place in this world and this reality. All Albedo wishes is for a quiet life where he can be happy and content. In that vein, Albedo also fears death in some way, or moreover, the thought of not existing. Do Warforged have an afterlife? Do they even die? Albedo struggles with the new mortal implications of being thrown into the world with a confounding conscience following the attainment of his sentient mind.

Intellectual Characteristics

Albedo is of average intelligence, but he is susceptible to more chaotic and outlandish ideas from time to time; such ideas may be influenced A02's chaotic disposition towards situations.

Morality & Philosophy

As a Wulvenscar monk, Albedo isn't particularly fond of killing, but such isn't the case for A02. Albedo is very trusting, and he generally likes people by default until he is given a reason not to, while A02 is the opposite where he is distrustful and generally dislikes weak people (which is anyone who isn't him). To both personas: family and friends are incredibly important, and they would do things in their own way to protect them. However, A02 views friends or family that Albedo has formed bonds with as pawns to be used to further his own ends; therefore, he allows them to live and peacefully coexist with them until the time comes when he has no use for them anymore.

Albedo's morality lies in the tenets that were taught to him during his time in the Wulvenscar. The themes of non-violence, compassion to others, and bouts of altruism were all evident in his ethical philosophy. However, A02 thinks the exact opposite in that he is violent, misanthropic, and prideful. Albedo and A02 are two sides of the same coin, in essence.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Albedo's driving force is to find his purpose in the world. Seeing as his kind is not accepted as a sentient member of society, he has the cards stacked against him in that regard. Because of his need for atonement, Albedo wishes to be the start of something new for the Warforged race. While he believes that Warforged like him with sentience are a special case, he holds on for hope that there are those just like him out there and wishes to reach out to them. He refuses to be branded just as a weapon; he seeks to break the chains that bind him because of what he was created for.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

As a monk, Albedo is a nimble and quick fighter, a graceful and acrobatic in battle and movement. When it comes to physical exertion, such as feats of strength, agility, and constitution, Albedo has trained aptly for such scenarios and can easily be called adept at such activities. However, he isn't the best conversationalist. He is often blunt, painfully frank, and emits a vibe that is socially repellent to most people. His mysteriously cloaked attire does not do him any favors either. The same goes for his other personality, A02; he is also a competent fighter but abhors interaction with anyone other than Albedo. His naturally intimidating presence and way of speech are frightening to most people.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes: His friends. (Attracted to Val, one of Lady Mistresses Aides, Lady Mistress)   Dislikes: Killing(albedo), Racism(both)
Albedo likes many things, but he likes the friends he has made the most. He has been attracted to Valeryn Dresden, one of the Lady Mistress' aides, and the Lady Mistress herself. This shows that Albedo, while an inorganic being, has shown the ability to feel attraction to those he deems acceptable. As for dislikes, Albedo hates the thought of ending another's life without provocation or need. And he dislikes the concept of racism, which he learned from the likes of Sheriff Barristan. A02, in turn, enjoys the prospect of the hunt. The adrenaline of stalking, tracking, and killing your prey is exhilarating for him. Like Albedo, he dislikes racism, but only if it is directed towards them. A02 is racist as well, as he believes that the Warforged are a step up above other mortal races.

Virtues & Personality perks

Albedo is kind and compassionate, a virtue reinforced by his Wulvenscar training. He has also shown to be charitable to his friends, where he buys equipment and accessories for them with his own coinage. He has also shown bouts of temperance in his combat, being able to spare defenseless opponents when they cannot fight. However, such attitudes have changed ever since he let A02 take control from time to time. But he still retains such virtues whenever possible. Albedo has shown that he is a force for good in the world he inhabits. He is helpful and thoughtful and shows genuine care toward those he cares about.

Vices & Personality flaws

One of Albedo's major strengths is also, in turn, his greatest weakness. His kindness, altruism, and compassion can be warped into a sense of naivete. In this case, Albedo is a person who trusts too easily and does not give a second thought to others' ulterior motives. Another major flaw in him is the existence of his second personality, the embodiment of who he never wants to be. A02, in contrast, is mired with many vitriolic desires, and sometimes Albedo allows him to resolve things in his (A02) way. On that note, Albedo is also secretive. He tells no one about his problems and only does so when the situation has escalated further without recourse. He is not one to talk about his feelings and will bottle them up no matter how painful it may get. He feels that he does not want to be a burden to anyone, but such hesitancy to speak about internal problems only seems to end up badly for his prospects.

Personality Quirks

Albedo, as he has self-professed: 'isn't the sharpest tool in the shed', but he is intelligent enough to feign ignorance when it is needed. Because of his generally forgettable visage, Albedo is mostly underestimated in this regard.

Social

Family Ties

Albedo considers his family to those that he has met in the Wulvenscar clan. He spent half a year with them and they will always have a special place in his heart for them.

Religious Views

Albedo believes in the existence of gods and deities, but he does not particularly worship a specific one.

Mannerisms

Due to his largely unappealing lack of charisma, Albedo often becomes rejected and glossed over for other people. In such social situations where this occurs, he is prone to episodes of sulking alone far away from the situation.

Trivia

Name

  • Albedo's name derives from the Latin term meaning 'whiteness'. It is the second of the four major alchemical stages after nigredo, the state of chaos and spiritual death.
  • The term albedo within the alchemical process is alluded to as 'washing away impurities'. Titus Burckhardt interprets the albedo as the end of the lesser work, corresponding to a spiritualization of the body. Claiming the goal of this portion of the process is to regain the original purity and receptivity of the soul.
  • This can be seen in his backstory as Albedo removing away the scars of his past to pursue a new life removed of such impurities; reclaiming his soul and starting anew towards a better purpose.
