Gartean is a Massive Red dragon, with Iron grafted to his spines and Jaws. He was one of the Dragons who fought beside Tiamat during the Purge War and, following her banishment, fled to the Elemental Plane of Fire, harried during his retreat by the Great Wyrm, Galaphael the Brilliant. He and his mate did not immediatley follow their fellows in servitude to the Fire Giants of the City of Brass but eventually faced no other choice when Rulena had a clutch of eggs and they had no other source of food for the future hatchlings. Gartean loathed to be shackled and collared but so he was and only months after subjugating himself he returned to his stables to find Rulena beaten and temporarily blinded, guarding the last of her eggs with her own body. Gartean went into a rage and tracked down those responsible, breaking his shackles in the process. He found the Giants who had perpetrated the act consuming the remnants of the eggs as a 'Delicacy'. He could not best their combined strength and was thrown back into the stables with Rulena beaten nearly to death.
From then on the pair were rarely apart, only when their masters forced them to be. After their son hatched and was shackled Gartean felt a pride he had never felt before. His son was a Regal Dragon, one of the few to ever claim so. He guarded his child, even if he was stuck in a humanoid form, with great pride. When he and Rulena discovered the poison within their very food Gartean took the bulk of it and accelerated the decay of his own mind, knowing that his mate and child would not suffer the same fate. He was hardly aware when his wings were removed and now has only the intelligence of a mere beast.
