The Crown versus the 'Aist'
The people of Alturis will, above all else, protect themselves from creatures like The Dread King returning to subjugate them.
This led to conflicts of interests 15 years ago when the trials of the Mage Slayers somehow resulted in such a public frenzy that The Elected Crown of Alturis. established the 'Protection Act' and overturned all charges against the Mage Slayers, instead hiring them as part of the government and renaming them The Inquisitors. The Protection act also removed the magical schools of dunamancy, enchantment and necromancy along with their foremost scholars.
While most of the main cities and peoples of Alturis accepted this act and themages begrudgingly allowed modify memory spells to be cast upon them. Some settlements and peoples rejected this notion for their own reasons, this was responded to with outright hostility and erupted into a civil unrest that bordered on outright war across the country.
Presently, many Aist mages live quietly and wish to study in peace. Others have established small revolutionary schools and anarchist states though many visit the towns and cities directly opposed to the 'Protection Act' where conflicts can erupt in moments and it is often as much a sanctuary as a warzone.
The primary players in this war are the Elected Crowns peoples, the Allied states, the Aist states, the wildlands and underground anarchists and, though the conflict doesn't spill into destructive warfare often, it is a primary fear of the peoples of Alturis.
