Decanus

The decanus is the leader of a contubernium, the squad of eight legionaries that live in the same tent and the two support units/servants of the contubernium.

Appointment

The decanus was appointed by the men of his contubernium, typically being the most senior legionary amongst them.

Duties

Their duties include organizing the erection of the marching tent and ensuring their tent-mates kept things tidy. Regardless of any responsibilities they have in garrison or camp, the decanus does not exercise any kind of battlefield command role.
