The Eastern Troubles
The Conflict
Prelude
Tension had developed between Andonia and its neighbors for decades. In 875 in a diplomatic effort the Qhaste begun negotiating a marriage between the Otrenzian Prince's son (Audres) and the Andone Prince's daughter (Amarina), and over the year the two young met several times to get to know each other. In late 876 the marriage was scheduled for the next year. Shortly after the engagement Prince Raìfaccused the Otrenzian heir of forcing himself on Amarinaduring a secret meeting Audres's head was immediately requested and denied. In retaliation an Andone band attacked and set fire to a bridge and a farm near the border, starting the conflict. After the first months of what appeared to be a new border skirmish, an andone army ,seven-thousand strong, crossed the border crossed Meanwhile the Divine Declarer in Restoyers publicly accused the Prince of Andonia of having orchestrated everything in order to start a war. Documents, stolen and sent to Pregaire, proved that warbands had begun to prepare long before the crime had been committed. The Declarer was imprisoned and fed to the dogs, an act that would ultimately outrage the Qhaste. Blessed Divine Alquino III then wrote a Divine Declaration which urged the king of Odria, Hadalard, to intervene .
The War
First Phase The invasion of Otrenza was brutal and innovative: the andone army moved quickly and in unexpected ways by marching only a few hours in the day but all the night. The Otrenzian forces were divided and destroyed in devastating night attacks in their own camp. When 5 months had passed the main Otrenzian army finally managed to force a direct confrontation...and wished it never had. The battle was a disaster, the andone knights had outmaneuvered their counterparts and enveloped the army, which was forced to a chaotic retreat through a river. In this battle Audres was captured and later sent to Restoyers where he was mauled alive by the same dogs which had previously devoured the Divine, all in front of her former promised one. Second Phase But the army of Andonia was forced to return home just before it could threaten VilleRoy as the Odrian forces, blessed by Alquino III, were now ready and marching. The war had escalated to a much larger level now, and Andonia was forced to call more warbands to face the overwhelming enemy. But king Hadalard had underestimated Andones numbers, and after the first successes and the liberation of Otrenzia the war stalled on at Andonia's borders. In those thick woods the Odrian heavy cavalry was inoperative, and the army columns were helpless against the rapid ambushes and incursions. Failed attempts of advancement through the border continued for two years, with extraordinarily high casualties.Outcome
