Debruk

A misty island of rocky fields, verdant pastures, haunted mountains and warring tribes, Debruk is an anomaly in the Western Continent. It is one of the only places where Fairies reign in the Otherworld, rather than the Spirits of Erecura. Its original culture and inhabitants were literally uprooted from the East in a terrible disaster, and though years of intermingling, invasions, and adaptation have changed them significantly, elements of their origins remain to this day.

Geography

A large island with rough edges, Debruk is surrounded on many sides by cliffs. These leaves only a few stretches of shoreline safe for proper landings and departures, which has insulated Debruk in some ways over the years. The highest mountain is less than a mile high.   The terrain is rocky with many elevation changes. It has valleys, sinkholes, fjords and numerous rivers and lakes. The island is ringed by cliffs and mountains, with lowlands in the middle. A number of peninsulas broken up by the island’s rivers allow for safe traversal of the shoreline.   Debruk’s climate is moist and mild, with abundant rainfall and few extreme temperatures (though it will snow from time to time). Summers are warm, winters are mild, ocean currents keep extremes away. Most winds come from the south east, breaking on the mountains on the eastern coasts. Rainfall therefore is emphasized in the eastern reaches.

Fauna & Flora

Woods and forests run rampant across most of Debruk’s surface. There is not a great diversity of plant life, but much of it cannot be found elsewhere in the West, for it derives from the ancient east. Mosses, pine trees, flowering plants, ferns and a multitude of trees cover much of the land, shading it even further than the limited sun afforded by the constant cloud cover and fog. Of particular import are the bogs and their denizens, including rare plants, fungus, pasture and meadow flowers, and other plants.   The seas around the land are rich with mussels, clams, and various fish. The land itself is host to wolves, deer, cattle, wild boar, sheep in great abundance.   Some of the supernatural beings of Debruk include fairies usually seen in the lands of Marchen, Borgondhi and Gloriana, as well as serpents, the occasional rare dragon, and fantastically massive river fish.

Natural Resources

Farmland is of the utmost importance. Much of Debruk’s economy is focused on the raising of cattle and sheep. There can be found gold and copper in the southern reaches. The wood is particularly bountiful. Fish, goats, cattle and grains are of key importance. Iron is relatively limited but in sufficient supply for the waging of wars.   Peat is cut from the bogs and burned as fuel in place of wood, largely in the boggy southern reaches of Debruk.
