When the world was divided into the Four Kingdoms, the power of
Dawn Magic was spun like thread into raw elements, pure life force, spiritual essence--all the matter and energy needed to build a structured, ordered world. The
Elemental Sovereigns built four worlds, each locked with the others, all contributing to an organic cycle of birth, life, death and renewal. Each plane of existence had its place.
They did not foresee the rise of the Fifth Kingdom--Dream.
An unexpected anomaly, an unintentional byproduct, an accident or unforeseen consequence. Something was left over when the Sovereigns divided the dawn, some essence they overlooked. It arose from the collective minds of the mortals born into the young world, emerging from their subconscious, connecting them to each other and to a vast cosmos beyond.
Psychic magic that derives from the Fifth Kingdom of Dream. At its most basic form, Oneiromancy allows a practitioner to control their Astral Form while sleeping, to explore or manipulate the dreams of others, to communicate. More advanced forms allow the harnessing of the ambient psychic energy present in the Dreamscape, allowing more powerful techniques while dreaming. Legend holds that some Oneiromancers learn how to channel psychic energy from the Dream World into the Mortal World, using it as a source of power for other forms of magic--they can even open physical gates into the mental world.
Properties
Dream Magic derives from the sub and unconscious. It can be wielded by sentient beings, but only by those who naturally sleep. As such, elves cannot inherently tap into Dream Magic. They must use Thaumaturgical Studies to gain access to it.
When manifest in the Four Kingdoms, Dream Magic looks like scintillating, rippling bright blue light, as if reflecting off a rippling pond.
Dream Magic naturally regenerates from the sleeper's mind and ambiently from the Fifth Kingdom. Tapping into it requires the wielder to access their unconscious mind. This means that if they access it while awake, their eyes flutter and they go into a sort of waking trance, immediately sleepwalking while they tap into their power source.
Dream Magic is most suited for enchantment, illusion and divination. It's a form of psychic energy with great power of the mind, inducing sleep, bewitching the senses, revealing secrets and hidden thoughts, and accessing distant places and memories other than your own.
Dream Magic is difficult to control and almost has a mind of its own--not a sentient will, but it's composed of thoughts and memories, and an Oneiromancer must learn to control their unconscious mind and avoid getting sucked into the memories and illusions they're utilizing.
Extremely skilled Oneiromancers can convert Dream Magic into other forms of energy, allowing them to use Dream as a power source for evocation spells. This is a very difficult technique and is not inherently a part of Dream Magic, requiring outside training.
Aside from drawing energy from Dream into the
Mortal World, Oneiromancy also leads very quickly to Lucid Dreaming. While dreaming, an Oneiromancer can manipulate their surroundings and change their immediate dreamscape much more proficiently than others.
With training, an Oneiromancer can graduate from Lucid Dreaming to Dreamwalking, leaving behind their own Dreamscape and manifesting in the dreams of others. While on someone else's "home territory," manipulating a dreamscape is far more difficult, but a powerful Oneiromancer carries the advantage wherever they go.
It is said that beyond the infinite cloud of Dreamscapes a truly masterful Oneiromancer can visit the minds of entities outside Anacra, or travel beyond the minds of mortals into the Dreamheart, a roiling place of mental energy. There are
things that emerge from the Dreamheart, alien entities of pure mind, and it is best to avoid their notice. Woe betide the Oneiromancer who falls into their clutches.
Rumors say that the most powerful Oneiromancers of all have mastered the art of sending not only their minds, but their bodies physically into Dream. Little is known of this powerful art.
