Stars Without Number boasts a few number of main classes, though they are split across sometimes unclear rulebooks and not always very clearly laid out. Here is a list of playable classes in Anareta, detailed in context and organized by 'coreness'. Note that Magister and Adept are directly split into sub-classes here despite only being branches of two 'classes' in their relevant rulebook.
If a class is not listed here, then it probably does not fit in this setting - but can be used at GM discretion.
Regular Classes
The following SWN classes are your regular SWN classes (including Arcanist)
Burglars, techies, starship pilots and shrewd politicians all fit here as they have one thing in common : they have exceptional non-combat talents and expertise in their chosen field. Arcane-attuned characters can also become Arcane Experts (Experts who can take Arcanist foci)
Fighters, thugs, elite marines - it does not matter what exactly they do, such characters have talents which help them survive situations where most would perish. Arcane-attuned characters can also become Arcane Warriors (Warriors who can take Arcanist foci)
Court mages, arcane scholars and dive-drive alchemists - any professional practitioner of standard
Spellweaving, who makes use of bioamps to amplify spell effects, belongs to this category.
The rare few survivors of the surging
Psionic Metadisease epidemic, who have found themselves cursed with fearsome powers, fall under this class - their survival ensured by the
Arkblazer Order or endured through
Hexo-Geni's infamously expensive training programmes.
Adventurers are jack of all trades who split their focus between spheres, not fitting neatly into another category. They can be Partial members of any two of the
above four classes.
Esoteric Classes
The following classes require a character to be able to perform
Spellweaving, and populate the setting only in very small numbers.
Summoners of occult magic beyond the veil, Pacters are
Magisters who spend decades of narrow and painstaking research to learn the ancient Boshaari secret of summoning Shades from beyond the veil of reality to do their bidding. They are usually feared and reviled for various reasons, but the pacts they make with eldritch beings are often too tempting. Pacters operate in small and isolated sects, and share a difficult relationship with the
Cult of the Arch-Code
Rectifiers are
Magisters belonging to an new-age sect - merging and reviving the lost arts of Mewei druids and Boshaari chrome-shamans, who devote their entire life to arcanically control and heal living tissue. for the right price. They usually share an unhealthy and heterodox fascination with cyberware or overtuning implants.
Sunblades or Solarians are
Adept warrior-monks employed by the
Order of Solari. Armed with overtuned and bespoke bioamps, they take
New Fallanism to extremes of ascetism and use esoteric powers in their quest for justice.
