The Kindred
An ancient planetary secret society known to include many awakened animals and druids. The Kindred are particularly well loved by yesreni. They are dedicated to defending Ancathra from invasions caused by otherworldly rifts
The Kindred is a very old, fairly small, and occasionally influential secret society with clandestine cells found all over the world. The Kindred was founded almost 200,000 years ago by a faction of treants and yesreni giants fighting a losing battle against the arrival of the first dragons and their ausrani armies. After centuries of war, the armies of the Kindred were destroyed by the forces of Erashion the Great, Emperor of Night, an impossibly ancient blue dragon. The survivors went underground, often forming the backbone of local resistance movements in the long millennia of draconic rule.
With the final victory of the Thousand Year Uprising and the Last Rebellion 16,000 years ago, the Kindred's mission changed. Their numbers dwindled as they dedicated themselves to protecting Ancathra from more otherworldly incursions. They consider the demonic rift that led to the Fall of Alousia and the Collapse of Godossea to be their greatest failure. They have powerful connections on several of the higher planes, most often Elysium and the Beastlands.
Today the Kindred are understood to be a worldwide secret society made up mostly of awakened animals, druids, rangers, bards and other wanderers. In reality, common awakened animals, peasants, traders and shopkeepers make up most of the clandestine Kindred network.
The primary mission of the Kindred is defending the world from invasions caused by planar rifts like the ones that brought the Five Emperors and their ausrani slaves, or the demons that destroyed ancient Alousia.
