'Fungal Skin'

A rare disease that only affects Oophagas, 'Toad Folk', and 'Salamander-Folk', this disease is easily recognized by the fungal caps that grow from the victim's skin.

Transmission & Vectors

Outbreaks typically start when an individuals comes into contact with a certain rare fungus. From there if other individuals touch the victim's skin, or comes into contact with contaminated water can also become infected.

Causes

The disease is caused by fungal spores coming into contact with a victim's skin, via through touch or contact with contaminated water. The larger the water source the less likely one is to get infected, for the spores die shortly after being submerged without a host.

Symptoms

It takes a few days for symptoms to appear, but when they do, the victim starts developing large, painful sores that last for several days. Then, large fungal caps will grow on the skin, leaving the victim in agony, and eventually killing them. The 'Toad Folk' have shown some immunity to the fungus,

Treatment

There are some reports of certain salves/herbs/techniques that can be used to save those suspected of coming into contact with the spore or who have just started developing sores, but the effectiveness of these aren't quite known. It is next to impossible to save a victim once the fungal caps emerge from the skin, and these individuals are often shown mercy at this point.

Hosts & Carriers

This disease is mostly found in the 'Salamander-folk', and 'Toad-folk' communities. Rarely it will pop up in Oophaga coomunities due to their limited contact with the other folk, but when it does it is known to devastate them.

Prevention

The best way to prevent an infection is to avoid contact with infected individuals and water.

Cultural Reception

As the 'Fungal Disease' spreads and more folk die to it, the more folk are terrified of catching it. As such those that show even the smallest of symptoms are shunned by their communities.
