Enshihoro
Enshihoro is a nation part of the lost islands in the middle of the Aomyne Ocean off the coast of Edun. Being considered a lost island means that Enshihoro is on the side of Phoebe with the least landmass, the closest land being Nocluin. Though it is technically considered part of Edun, Enshihoro is isolated in the centre of the Aomyne Ocean and was only discovered within the last two centuries by other people.
While most nations on Phoebe are in possesion of various Old Towns , Enshihoro is notable for having the most in any concentrated area. Even the capital Kandou has a prominent Old Town sealed off along the banks of the Hayakotan Lake.
Demography and Population
As per the rule of both the Kayto and the Protectorate, Enshihoro is divided into smaller states to be governed by certain lords and their families. All citizens of the states must pay significant taxes to their respective lord and his estate, who in turn must pay even larger taxes to the government. Whether he pays to the Protectorate or the Emperor is a choice left to the individual lords.
There are several major cities in Enshihoro, the two largest being the two government cities; the capital Kandou and military HQ Kurimatsunai where the Protectorate lives. Both cities are on the waterfront with Kandou having sprung up around Hayakotan lake while Kurimatsunai is a port city on the coast.
That said, several other city centres exist in Enshihoro, almost one per state as ruled by the individual lords. These cities often spring up around the castles of the lords, followed by the estates of the Reidei - guards and their families - who serve them.
Communities usually appear where a need must be met - a fishing village on a riverbank, a mining and forge village surrounding a mine, a trade village along a major highway, etc. Every single settlement in Enshihoro serves a very specific need, and as such are very tailored to whatever trade is most practiced in that town. Due to this very localized method of trade and production, very few people ever leave the general area they grew up in as they've often learned a trade ideal for that specific area.
Quality of life depends of the season and level of trade - a farming community is going to suffer if they've had a bad harvest, etc. - though it is generally accepted that rural communities have a very high quality of life.
The same cannot be said of the cities as they're often rife with crime and poverty. Oftentimes the civil management of these cities is left to the lord of that city, most of whom rarely leave their castle save for official business in either Kandou or Kurimatsunai. As such the well being of the citizens is often left by the wayside and a sort of self-governance sets in, most of the times ending in disaster.
