Apprentice
There are apprentices in many professions, but mostly in monasteries and craftsmen. An apprentice is usually 10-15 years old, but sometimes younger or older, rarely 16 years or older. Usually, a parent forms a contract with a master for the training of their child. Occasionally, a teenager signs a contract of their own.
This contract is for the training of the apprentice, usually for no monetary value only room and board. The length of the contract is usually between 4-10 years. The apprentice promises obedience, and hard work. They are not free to leave until the contracted time is complete except with the permission of his master or the cancellation of the contract.
Apprenticeships involve on-the-job training and studying with the master to learn a trade. In many places, this is a type of indenture as it is unpaid. As well as the specific trade the master is supposed to teach them basic subjects that they would have learned in a school.
The relationship between apprentice and master was often as close as between father and son. Sometimes they married into the family and were often even remembered in the master’s will. Some masters took advantage of this “free labor” and would abuse their apprentice, even withholding the journeyman rank by saying they aren't ready.
