Corpse-Walker's Inner Council - Eater-of-Dead

There is always a price for power - and failure.
— Marrow, Corpse-Walkers Exterreri
Once the master of the Corpse-Walker, nothing remains of the man. The Eater-of-Dead is a monster made by Thaumaturgical mutation, a amorphous thing of grave-dirt and corpse-flesh. In the past, he was a figure of great charisma and a magnetic personality who drew others to worship him, like moths to the flame. He could bend almost anyone to his well and used his gifts to pursue terrible mysteries. Such secrets became his undoing and decades of abusing the powers of Thaumaturgy invited corruption into his body and mind until they dissolved. Only hunger and madness remain.   Now, the Eater-of-Dead is no longer part of the Exterreri but their prisoner.

Devour the Dead

Eater-of-Dead formed the Corpse-Walkers after unlocking the secrets that the syndicate is now infamous for. He was the first to puppeteer the dead and used his talents to set the foundation for the criminal empire. In the beginning, the profits were incidental. They were a means to aid him in discovering the darkest secrets in Araea, with the collection of Key of the Black Star fragments chief among them. At his height, there were few as well-versed in the mysteries of the Black Star as him.

His fall from grace was not swift, but a pitiful degeneration that spanned over a decade. In his lust for power and search for answers, the Eater bloated himself on spirit-ichor and spells.   When Marrow saw the signs of corruption upon his masters' flesh and the way his mind was beginning to slip, he encouraged him. The answers they sought were worth any price, and the Eater-of-Dead paid it.
Ever since, Marrow has kept the creature locked away under the pretense of caring for their one-time master. In truth, Marrow keeps the beast only to use in his own experiments, hoping to find some answers in the swollen corpse-flesh and mad shrieks of the Eater-of-Dead.

Among the Dead

Of the Eater's original disciples, only Marrow and Grandmother Death remains. The others have vanished, faced their own degeneration or in one case slain by the Eternal Shrike. Of the two, Grandmother sees his fate as a warning and a sign of what awaits them. She believes Marrow keeps the creature out of sentimentality, unaware of what goes on within Marrow's prison-laboratory.

The others only know of the creature in his current state and the few scraps of information the two disciples have shared. Most of the time, he is a forgotten terror, thought of only occasionally and then mostly as the abomination. Visits are rarely asked for and seldom acquiesced to.   If the creature still possess any higher thought, it is not apparent.
The Eater sleeps, eats, and coats the walls of his prison with discharges of foul-smelling sludge. It knows enough to fear its warden and lashes out at anyone else.   Until now. As Three-Skull slips deeper into the throes of Desolation, he has become more insistent upon visiting the creature. Three-Skull has told Marrow that he can speak to the creature and carry word to the things beyond them. Exactly what those things are and what word the mad thaumaturgist intends to bring is lost to his madness.

"The Eater sleeps, eats, and coats the walls of his prison with discharges of foul-smelling sludge." YIKES! Keep it away from me.
