Temple of Crooked Sleep

A structure that once held a splinter sect of the Exultist faith, one following the teachings of a dwarven priest named Arkyle Takarar, the remains of the monastery now bears a new name known more commonly by those who have explored it: The Temple of Crooked Sleep.   The ruins predate Caracara by several centuries, and the only documents noted for it within the local Clave's archives reference files deep within the archives of the House Absolute in Nessus, several months' travel south to the Commonwealth. Even before the goblin tribes had taken up in the Crooked Hills, and thus eventually the temple, explorers found the ruin oppressive to explore for long periods. These explorers complained of strange dreams that persisted for several days after entering the ruin. Once the goblins came, however, even these rare excursions stopped.    In the intervening decades, some modest communication and trade were done with the goblin community, though this, too, degraded as most of the tribes were driven from the area, supplanted by a singular, incredibly insular commune notable for a common mutation and strange mannerisms. These goblins were notoriously prickly, even violent on occasion. A trend that has, unfortunately, only grown on through the decades.    In the present day the monastery's location is only fully known in maps and records held in the Exultist Clave. What little word continues to spread around Caracara is children's tails and the occasional historical discussion by folks with nothing better to do.

History

Father Takarar believed the strange emanations that rose up from the hills could be used to augment the Deep Fields' ability to focus into the future, and with his follower's saught to harness this towards wisdom and learning. For many decades much research and contemplation were done within the hills, with the priests reportedly able to scrye far away places through their dreams, or even travel to new realms altogether. As time went on, however, the missives grew more sparse, and a few decades after Takarar passed on to his second life things in the monastery took a turn. The letters arriving from the Monastary began containing treatises with no known connection or application within the deep field, appearing to be little more than nonsense ramblings and meandering diagrams. Eventually, these would grow increasingly unhinged, proclaiming strange warnings foreseen within the farthest depths of the Deep Field. Several times the church sent priests and nanos in to investigate these claims, but always returned with having found nothing to substantiate their claimes. There was still insight to be found within the monasteries tomes, and copies of these were brought back to Nessus, but the growing consensus was that the priests of the Takarar monastery had grown into a delusional, apocalyptic cult.   One final missive came to Nessus, signed to the Emerald Pope themself. Its contents, now archived in the cavernous libraries of the House Absolute said simply: "The Singing Obelysk Ascends. We spill our blood and empty out our minds, but still it ascends. We commit ourselves to do all we can. Gird yourselves, for all that comes after is darkness."   The Pope dispatched a final team of investigators to the monastery, only to find its upper levels seemingly abandoned. Not a soul roamed its halls. By all appearances, it looked as if the structure had been vacated months prior. Below they found some signs of violence, however, but nothing to account for the disappearance of an entire monastery.   Two points proved strange in the report that was returned and ultimately archived, however. The first was the presence of several rooms, including a single sizeable one, that was locked away behind powerful spells of a type they investigators had yet to encounter. No magical esoteries examine or dismantle them--the most they were able to ascertain was that the magic seemed to be of a type of chronal warding that somehow set the gates outside of time.   The other, perhaps less notable but still strange note was the carving that was discovered as the investigators left. It perhaps not even been noted in the report had it not been for the fact that several of the team were adamant that the inscription was not present when they first ventured in. The inscription said, simply:   The Monastery of Prophesy--8041-8473 CE Four Hundred and Fifty Followers of Takarar Teachings Rest Below. Some by choice, but all in the service of the Pancreate's plan and the Increate's mercy. Let this be a monument for those who sacrificed all for a world that will hopefully never Know.   The investigation file within the archives for the Takarar Monastery remains open. However, shortly after the conclusion of the Voidgate War, a clerical reassignment relegated the case to Non-Active status.
