Jass Caleil

A handsome man with dark brown hair and dark blue eyes, usually dressed in fine silks of grayish purple and black. He walks with a limp and carries an ornamental cane with the sigil of House Caleil emblazoned on it - a badger encircled by cobalt specks. Age has left a number of wrinkles on his chiseled face and he generally looks through spectacles to offset his vision problems. He speaks softly and generally takes care with his words, but those who have been at the tower long enough know that he has a deep and dark temper when triggered. Otherwise, he spends most of his time brooding in his room, writing and reading letters and - occasionally - gazing at the portraits of his loved ones (particularly his lost love Ilia) hung up across his room. Jass Caleil is the patriarch of the second branch of the Caleil household. It's said that he was born just after his twin brother, Aldrich, and forever cursed to be the lesser lord. However, Jass has seemingly not balked at his duty as the second son and helps his brother Aldrich to administer the Caleil lands and family interests faithfully. Both brothers are estranged with their younger sister Nethaline, who claimed her mother's family name and ran off to Wychent in their youths. He has been criticized by his children as being too slow to act, too hidebound and too cautious with any kind of coin. But he is knowledgeable and wise when it comes to matters of politics and finances, so it may be for the best. Those with a closer knowledge of Jass (probably Matthew Vilter as a result of gossip trading amongst the servants, or Trent Marrot if he had interest to observe such things) may have heard that he has a weakness for pretty women. Though he is seen to be a very dutiful son, some have pondered why he eloped with Ilia Summers, against the protests of his late father. She was a common born woman who he, by all accounts, married out of love. She died in 180, while bearing their fifth child. He chose Jaina as his heir, surpassing his fourth child and only son Orisan. Though the internal relationships within the family are not entirely clear to outsiders, anyone who has spent enough time in the Tower will have noted that he seems to have a rather strained relationship with his son Orisan, who he seems to view as lazy and troublesome, as well as his daughter Kina, who he has been struggling to repair the reputation of after her bringing two bastard sons to the tower. He has not yet legitimized these bastards, though it is unclear if Kina has asked him or what his reasoning for refusing to do so is. You simply cannot gamble when the lives of your people are at stake... Even if the gamble works out in your favor, you've failed your people by having thrown what isn't yours onto the ante. Duty this, honor that, yet he spends all his time with his dogs or skulking about the Rose Tower." His personal guard is the knight Ser Beirik Arond . Pets: Jass has two pet hounds, Trekker and Beck, born of the same litter six years ago. They are fiercely loyal and follow him everywhere - though most of his kids love them, they are undeniably his dogs, sleeping in his room. He feeds them well and has a steward run the dogs every morning, so they are in good physical shape and could defend him if he were in danger, but are otherwise peaceful and friendly.
