The Second Abyssal War

Who doesn't love a good sequel to an existential threat? Surely not the recuperating elven empires that were slowly returning to their former glory after the fall of The Antecean Empire.
Unfortunately for the elves, humanity is nothing if not persistent, and a few short centuries after the Antecean calamity, they were already building new kingdoms and civilizations to replace the ones they had lost, and they were becoming increasingly aggressive in expanding into lands the elves had reclaimed.
Elves never held a numbers advantage against humanity even at their zenith, and the numbers of men were rapidly expanding. Seeking an advantage, the elves attempted to reactivate the old Antecean Nexus to increase their mobility and bolster their influence. Unfortunately, whether through natural weathering or deliberate tampering, their attempts to activate the long-dormant Nexus resulted only in a massive planar tear opening a rift into the Lower Planes.
Eager demonic creatures poured forth from the rift and wreaked havoc on the elves. With the help of an organization called the Nightguard, a precursor to today's Night's Song, the fiends were eventually beaten back thanks to a counterstrike that infiltrated the pits of the Abyss and assassinated the demon prince overseeing the invasion.
While this Abyssal War proved to be far shorter than its predecessor, it proved to be a death blow to any hopes the elves held of reclaiming their lost glory. With their strength greatly diminished, the kingdoms of men, bolstered by their victories against the demons, quickly regrouped and turned their focus on kicking the elves back to their far-flung strongholds and reclaimed Archaios for themselves once and for all.
