Grimfum Enclave

Deep in the sweltering Deepsmoke Caverns, a huge cavern serves as home to the Grimfum Duchy, a small society of powerful fire giants. The cavern is about 2 miles across, roughly circular, and descends toward the center like a stalagmite-ridden valley. The main entrance is a cavern leading south from the center, which leads into the mazelike Deepsmoke Caverns. An opening to the east leads into a mine rich with aluminum, gold, nickel, lead, zinc, copper, and diamonds. Steamy boiling hot springs are found scattered around the west edge of the cave. Small miscellanous alcoves and caves scatter around the edges of the atrium, though one such cave leads to a hidden tunnel that descends all the way into the Magma Tunnels of Subterranea. This path is a closely-guarded secret known only to Volnas and people he trusts. This secret tunnel contains an old fire giant tomb.   The enclave contains four manors, each positioned just off of the cardinal directions near objects of interest. Beside the southeast wall is the Grimfum Forge, which is legendary among fire giants as the place where their ancestors crafted the Surtunhammar, along with countless other feats of metalwork.

Forgotten Giant Tomb

The following stone reliefs are carved into the walls of the tomb, along with inscriptions in Giantish:
  • "This is the resting place of Duke Gurvhogg Lauvandr, honorable leader and tactical general in the defense against the smallfolk." [There is a relief depicting a fire giant with crown-shouldered armor wielding a hammer against an army of upstanding insects.]
  • "Brilliant traps hewn of lava tubes and hot steam evened our numbers against the smallfolk onslaught." [There is a relief depicting many insectfolk caught in a wave of hot lava. A fire giant in the background holds their hand to the ceiling as they watch.]
  • "When the smallfolk invasion ceased, Duke Lauvandr had the wisdom to dismantle the Surtunhammar into eight pieces, so that no tyrant would use it to conquer our people." [There is a relief of a fire giant hammering an awl into a large maul, breaking it into deliberate fragments.]
  • "The pieces were given to each of his seven barons. Only in unity could the hammer be reassembled. Duke Lauvandr hid the eighth piece in the grand northern desert 'due north of the highest point of the world’s hottest feature.'" [There is a relief of the giant in crown-shouldered armor giving a block of stone resembling a fire elemental to another giant. Other giants are depicted holding a large gem, a rod, and a triangle-indented block with a smoke motif.]
