Chapter 5: Hot Potatoes Report

General Summary

A mounted courier delivers a letter from Aungier, inviting our adventurers back to Myrethorn Tower. After discussing their options, they return to Ghelbride and write to Aungier, inviting him to meet at the Argent Eagle next day noon.   To the Gnome's Room to drink and learn the punchline to the joke, which Finn nearly guesses and gets a free ale. Tater plays a rousing song with Patches, another bar patron, after which the crowd showers them with coins.   Following a lead from the town notice board, the Party go to Lilac Fields to clear an imp from local Lord Rosetree's house. Children there, spookily messing with Eiger Rosetree. The Party kills the imp, but do not release Rosetree. Tater gives 5 gold each to the children, restitution for the swindling Rosetree did of their parents. Bruni threatens Rosetree and then they loot his house.   Return to town the next day to divide spoils among childrens' families. They also ask about Rosetree's ledger and the odd "recompense" on several lines, but they don't have any answers.   Party goes to the Argent Eagle to meet Aungier, who seems genuinely glad to see them. They confront each other over trust and then guardedly tell the story of their encounter with the elves, etc. Aungier is surprised the elves didn't kill them. They talk about the power and danger of Grayfrost.   At Myrethorn, Aungier demonstrates some of the power that Grayfrost helps channel with a pulse of lightning sent up a copper column, which burns his hand. "Without a conduit, this would have leveled the town square," he tells the Party.   (Aungier's backstory: Held prisoner by Tirrelais and saw some of their experiments using Grayfrost.)
