Calimshan

The Gateway to the East

The Gateway to the East

Demographics

Human's are the predominant race in Calimshan, there is a significant population of Elves and Dwarves, and a small minority of Half-Elves making Calimshan the most diverse city of Areldia

Government

Calimshan is Ruled by their 3 Trade Princes. These are the heads of the three merchant guilds of Calimshan.

Defences

Lacking an outer wall, Calimshan relies on the canals and the size of its sprawl to discourage attack by making it inconvenient to invade and too large for any army to hold. Furthermore, Calimshan relies on constructive trade relationships with all powers to prevent it from becoming a target in the first place. The Palaces of the three trade princes are all set upon built up islands at the points of an equilateral triangle making invasion an obstacle for a land army and naval invasions are deterred by the three islands ability to provide mutual defense.

Industry & Trade

Calimshan is known as the Gateway to the east since it is the only city of Sunhold to trade directly with the Elves and Dwarves of Areldia. All trade to and from the Human region of Areldia must pass through Calimshan.

Infrastructure

Calimshan is navigated internally mostly via a series of canals. Men are seen at all hours poling barges ferrying goods and people about the city. A set of pumps and sluice gates maintain the water level in the city's canals as a constant height lest trade and transport be negatively affected.

Guilds and Factions

Calimshan has 3 Merchant Guilds a Thieve's Guild, and halls of the two adventuring guilds, The Adventuruer's Guild and The Brotherhood of Slayers. Law and order is maintained by a city watch formally titled the @Carbinieri but known colloquially as @The Long Spears due to the length of spears with which they are equipped. These spears serve double duty as their weapons and as push poles for navigating their skiffs around Calimshan's canal network.

Architecture

In calimshan, the residents do not keep lawns or yards. The wealthiest residents live in houses with front doors that open directly to a canal. The buildings of calimshan are almost uniformly 4 stories tall and roofed in red ceramic tiles that give calimshan a unique and distinctive appearance when viewed from above. Arched stone bridges, some of impressive size, cross the canals and allow foot traffic to traverse areas where the canals become congested.
