Aikhsi

The Aikhsi, known as Aichsìuni or Aichsènuni in imperial records, were an ancient race of merfolk who lived in the seas to the south of Himixia. They were the first species in the world to evolve sentience.   The ancient Aikhsi had extensive underwater settlements suggesting the presence of a rather sophisticated civilisation dating back about four thousand years before the first records of civilisation on Arkodia. These settlements have long since been abandoned, only their ruins remain, evidence suggests that they had migrated closer to the shoreline and eventually became entirely terrestrial. The reason for this mass exodus remains unknown, the current prevailing theory suggests a sudden drop in food supply resulting in the need to search for new sources of food.   Eventually the Aikhsi split into many different tribes and over time evolved into different species. The Aikhsi and their ancestors have an unusually chaotic biology that results in an abnormally fast evolutionary process. As each tribe went its own way they quickly adapted to their new environments and eventually became unrecognisable from each other.   Some Aikhsi migrated to Arkodia and set up settlements in the east long before the formation of Noken and Havlean society. Unfortunately all that remain are in ruin. Due to unknown circumstances, the Aikhsi populations went into decline around the time that the Tsedrin and Noken migrated into their lands. Only a few disparate groups were left; among them were those who settled near the Onul mountains who interbred with the Noken migrants, there descendants would live on as the Garetor and Hmun-Cha.   Now the original Aikhsi are extinct but their descendants are abundant.
