Eblo (EH-blow)
Objective:
- The objective of Eblo is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards.
Players:
- 2 to 6 players
Setup:
- Shuffle the deck and deal the entire deck of cards equally among all the players. Each player should hold their cards face-down and not look at them.
Gameplay:
- The player to the left of the dealer goes first, and play continues clockwise. On their turn, a player must play one or more cards of the same rank.
- The next player must play cards of a higher rank than the previous player or pass.
- The rank of the cards, from lowest to highest, is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A.
- If a player cannot play cards of a higher rank, they must pass their turn.
- When all players pass consecutively, the last player who played cards starts a new round by playing any card(s) they desire.
- The rank of the new round is determined by the rank of the last card played in the previous round. For example, if the last card played was a 6, the new round starts with 6 as the lowest rank.
- A player can choose to skip their turn voluntarily, even if they have cards they could play.
- The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the game. The round continues until only one player has cards left.
Special Cards:
- 2: The 2 card is the lowest rank and can be played at any time to start a new round.
- A: The A card is the highest rank and can beat any other card. It can be played at any time to beat the previous rank played.
- Jokers: If you wish, you can include the jokers in the deck and assign them special abilities or rules, such as skipping the next player's turn or reversing the order of play.
Variations:
- Team Play: Players can form teams of two and sit across from their partner. The objective remains the same, with teammates trying to get rid of their cards collectively.Time Limit: Set a time limit for each turn, such as 2 seconds. If a player cannot play within the time limit, they automatically pass their turn.
- Multiple Decks: For larger groups or longer gameplay, multiple decks can be combined and shuffled together.
History
Eblo, meaning match or contest in Ceiti, is an ancient card game popular in Taqqadiya and port cities across the globe. It is not known when the game was first invented, but archeological discoveries suggest it dates to at least 3300 YGR (1700 BYGP).
