Argentine Cartography

Sedden

  On Argent, the evolution of cartographic terms was greatly influenced by it's unique geography and climate, to the degree that their review is often necessary. As you may know, the prevailing winds on Argent all travel in the same direction. This is due to the size of Argent not permitting the formation of cells like some larger bodies would. This gives rise to the primary direction pair used by those who engage in sea or air travel, first used by Seddenese peoples: Windward This direction indicates the direction from which the wind originates. On the standard Argentine map this is the right-hand side of the document. Refering to this direction might take the form of pointing out something "to the Wind", or relating something as "on the Wind-side" of something else. Windward nations often show more mercantile progress than others because of the greater ease they have in leaving their ports to bring good to other places, returning with a lighter load, and are as such often export-focussed when they exist on air or sea trade routes.
Leeward
The "Lee", or sheltered side is the direction opposing Windward. The Lee-side nations are often the receivers of Windward trade, an example of which is the island nations of Iquonial.
Flow
As the city of Filyn'Drast is the source of the commonly known "Seddenese" language, it is their perception of the currents of The Great Tradeway which shaped the development this term which follows the flow of the current from their city along the coast to Murinechire. The opposite of this direction is called "Antiflow".   Because the standard Argentine map folds down the middle, Leeward and Windward are consistent across the entire document, as the left and right-hand side respectively.

Sear

  The Searan language had far less use for trade and wind-focussed terms. As the lives of the people of Sear revolved more around ground-based activity, they came up with a one-axis system of direction based on the perception of their local surroundings at a less-than-cartographic scale:
Sourceways
By holding one's right hand in a fist straight up toward The Source, a person may then rotate the hand until the fingers curl in the direction of the Suns' travel across the gap. In this orientation, the thumb of the same hand now indicates the axis of rotation of Argent, and points in the direction known as "Sourceways". This gesture is used as the basis for all Searan colloquial direction. The direction opposing Sourceways is called "Wyrmward". The use of this gestural direction system allows the derivation of a perpendicular axis travelling Lee-to-Wind, giving rise to the following independently-developed synonyms for the Seddenese directions in the Searan language:
Sunways
Often confusing at first to those who expect this direction to indicate the direction of the Sun (just as they might expect Sourceways to indicate "up" toward The Source) and ready to point out that the sun switches directions each day, this direction indicates a line along the ground perpendicular to Sourceways in the direction of the fingers of the right hand. On the Argentine standard map, this causes Sunways to point from the right side of the map to the left side, making it the synonym for Leeward. The opposite direction, and synonym for Windward, is "Duskward"   The use of "-ways" and "-ward" for the Searan directions has results in a shorthand when context is sufficient to glean meaning. Laymen may simply use "to the way", "on the ward", or similar expressions to save time.

Archons

The final cartographic development, also created in Sear, was thanks to the Archons, whose elevated understanding of the structure of Sear allowed them to see it at a higher level, both philosophically and literally. The Archons introduced a new axis of direction which they generally keep from their subjects, both because they have no need for its use at their scale of thought, and to avoid their inquisition and self-improvement due to the expansion of understanding:
Rimward
This direction refers to the shortest direction which leads to the rim of a particular shell of Argent. It is not a consistent direction, and will depend on the location of the referenced object or speaker.
Wellward
Referring to the "well" of a bowl, or the deepest portion, Wellward refers to the center of an Argentine continent. Places which are "in the well" in a geographic sense are in the center of a continent.
Axial
The Archons, having understood the physical structure of Argent as a planet for centuries, adopted a method of indicating their second coordinate direction revolving around the rotational direction of Argent itself (no pun intended). They coincidentally chose their right hand for the system as well, which causes their primary direction to be toward the bottom of the Argentine standard map, and corresponding to "Wyrmward" in the Searan system.   These radial coordinates are unique to Argent's hemispherical structure, and though they do not find as common use as the previously described directional terms, they will frequently be used in correspondence between and among Archons and any they employ to solve problems.
English Equivelent:
Windward = East
Leeward = West
Flow = South
Antiflow = North   Sourceways = North
Wyrmward = South
Sunways = West
Duskward = East
  Axial = South
