High Priest of Kelemvor

The High Priest of Kelemvor

Appointment

The High Priest is chosen by The Sodality, a council of elder priests. The elder priests are elected by the Cardinal Chapels of Rivertide (North, South, East, and West), as well as the highest-ranking Kelemvorean priests of Dunagan and Shadowcliff. The election of a new high priest is signified by blaring of the organ pipes outside The Spire. The High Priest is appointed for life.

Duties

Leadership of the Kelemvorean church worldwide.   Head of State and Government for the city-state of Rivertide.   Serve as primary speaker for Kelemvor in worldly affairs.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A high priest can only be removed if it can be demonstrated that Kelemvor no longer works through them. The council of highest-ranking Kelemvorean priests can, with unanimous agreement, call for a Demonstration of Divinity. Once the call has been issued, the high priest is confined to The Spire and has one week to perform a divine miracle. If they fail to perform said miracle, they are removed.

Cultural Significance

The High Priest of Kelemvor is a controversial political figure. As leader of both a church and sovereign city-state, other leaders have often feared conflict of interest within the Kelemvorean Church.
