Shadowfell

The Shadowfell, also known as the Negative Energy Plane exists as an "echo" of the Prime Material plane. In counterpart to the Feywild, it is a place of dark and decay. Since the sundering of the Nine Hells, the negative plane has become the resting place of undeclared mortal souls, taking the place of the fields of Asphodel.

Negative Energy

The Negative Plane exists as a reflection of the prime material. Such as a mirror reflects an image in reverse, so too does life and energy reverse here. These rules make travel to the Shadowfell tricky. It is said that for each living creature that enters the plane, a nightwalker leaves, and wreaks havoc upon the world around it.

Geography

The Shadowfell is topographically equivalent to the material plane, but warped in shadow and gloom. There is no light or color; no sun, moon, or stars adorn the sky. The magic warping the shadow plane warps space and time. Paths seem to diverge differently from the same starting point on subsequent visits, making mapping impossible.

Ecosystem

Mortal souls that come to rest in the plane of shadow will eventually succumb to the melancholic energy of the plane and rot away, becoming Death Fungus. The Death Fungus emits spores of positive energy that feed the denizens of the negative plane, such as the shadow-touched elves and terrifying nightwalkers.

History

Before the sundering of the hells, it is theorized that the shadowfell was a much weaker place. Its power today comes from the positive energy given off by rotting souls, so without that, the plane would have been faint and ethereal, and its denizens rather inconsequential.
