Shadar-kai are the descendants of a group of elves that fled to the Shadowfell some millenia past. Warped by living and evolving in the negative plane, they are much changed.

Shadar-kai in the Shadowfell look withered, almost corpse-like, touched by death. On other planes they appear more youthful, their skin only possessing a deathly pallor. Their elven appearance is still informed by their ancestry, such as the tetrabrachial genes from wood elves.
Shadar-kai have the power of shadow within them. They can see clearly at night, and their elven hearing is only sharpened by the silence of the shadow plane. They are resistant to decay and necrotic damage, and can teleport between spaces of darkness.

Civilization and Culture
History
The Shadar-kai are descendants of the firt cult of Ira. Long ago in the time before, followers of Anima worked to spread their influence across Arxios, wiping the cult of the shadow god from the world. In their climactic battle, the Shadow Cultists made a last-ditch attempt to survive by opening a portal to the Negative Plane. As the last remnants of the cultists entered, a mass of nightwalkers exited. The crusaders of light were forced to fight off the monstrous nightmares, giving time for the shadow cult to escape and close the portal.
In the end, the nightwalkers were defeated, sealing the cultists in the negative plane forevermore. But the cost was great; Most of the crusaders were killed and their strongholds destroyed, and their descendants were left to pick up the pieces and keep an eternal watch on the plane of shadow.
