Hyakki Yagyō
"Cling, clang, pitter-pat
Spirits march and dance tonight
Celebrate their troupe"-Miyazato Eishi, Ancient Poet
History
Every year, at the advent of the new year, temples across Kondai spill forth Yōkai of all sorts that raucously dance and parade through the streets, carelessly sweeping up mortals in their wake and marching about from late evening until the dawn. This is a time of peace for the Konshi and Yōkai alike, where they may participate in a joint festival and celebration. It is effectively a party under the obligations of a truce that no one, not even King Mao or Emperor Makisugu would dare violate, for the combined anger of the Yōkai and denizens of the land for violating this ancient rite would topple them both. At the end of the night, citizens are led to their homes in the care of the spirits and the spirits depart from the land through gates opened in the shrines.
