Shaitan

Terribly powerful creatures of the Mirabi Desert. Able to grant any mortal's wish and manifested by the elements themselves, the Shaitan are forces of nature powered by pure arcane power. The true reason why the Mirabi has not fallen inside Altrian is because of these creatures raw power.

Civilization and Culture

History

The Shaitan inhabited the Mirabi Desert long before any other races came about, living under the rule of their deity, the Architect of the Stars. Now that he has taken on a more absent role, they mostly exist in and around the desert.

Types of Shaitan

Not all Shaitan are identical and while there are many variants yet to be discovered, generally these Outsiders manifest on Ashaia by aligning themselves with one of the four primary elements: earth, air, fire, and water.

Dao

Kaolin the Earth Spirit
The Shaitan that align themself with the earth are known as Dao. They are the least vain, obnoxious, and malicious of all their kin. They often inhabit hidden caves in the desert, causing them to spring up with a natural wealth of crystals. They are not easily angered or offended like their kin, but a Dao is every bit as dangerous should you manage to earn its ire.

Djinn

The most numerous of the Shaitan are those that have aligned themself with the element of air. They like to make bargains with mortals, much like the Fey, but twist the bargain so that they are given what they are owed in full and the mortal is given something that fits all the legal requirements, but is definitely not what the mortal asked for. Cheating a Djinn out of his or her fun is usually not recommended either, so it is safest to avoid any sort of pact at all with them. The legends of spirits bound in oil lamps that must grant you three wishes are most likely based on a powerful Djinn who was beaten at its own game and forced into servitude.

Efreet

Creatures of passion and fury, the Efreet (sometimes called Efrit or Efreeti) are those Shaitan that have bound themself to fire. Typically known to be emotionally unstable and flighty, an Efreet who is scorned could see a whole village burned down simply for offending it. Should you manage to find yourself in an Efreet's good graces, you will most likely be doted upon as most Efreet tend to push away those who could be close to them and torch those who are. This is not necessarily a moral issue to the Efreet as it is simply a consequence of the element they have bound their self to. Immense, unstable power incarnate.

Marid

The rarest of all Shaitan is the Marid. As desert dwelling outsiders, the number of Shaitan that have bound their self to water is lacking. Typically existing only in a desert oasis or particularly popular water feature (say, a palace's fountain), the Marid think they are more important than the sun and moon. A well praised Marid may offer small treasures, while a Marid that has been offered no praise may make it so any water you drink from their oasis is not but ash in your mouth. A Marid whose water has been polluted will likely be driven insane and incredibly dangerous.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Unlike most Outsiders, the Shaitan freely interact with mortals, sometimes going as far as taking up residence in richly decorated homes. They typically keep to the larger cities in Bazaar and often refer to Bazaarite Humans as Jann, alluding that the genetic differences they have from other humans might be due to distant Shaitan ancestry.

Average Physique
While they can take any shape or form, Shaitan typically appear as adult humanoids in pique physical condition. Some who have acquired immense wealth have taken on more "lazy" appearances, of a slightly obese sultan-type individual, though it is suspected this is just an air they have put on.
