Olde Anglesh

a dead language kept alive in secret

Olde Anglesh was the language spoken by most of the people settled in ancient Landen Village. There were however a handful of other languages spoken by various peoples who had been on their great journey to Tienwara ya'Shuu before getting trapped on Ashvaarya. In particular, most members of the Chi’yuan spoke either Hingua or Nippyon as well as Olde Anglesh.   After the betrayal of the Magsura and the expulsion of the Chi’yuan, the use of Olde Anglesh became considered a rude reminder of betrayal and the trauma of their experiences. By the time of the deliverance, Old Anglesh had all but disapeared and Hingua, Nippyon, and a couple of other minor old tongues had begun to merge into a proto-form of the modern Dal Karchuan language that has been spoken accross Yatan'aa for centurities.   This history, and the near association to the Magsura, the use of magic, and the tyranny of the lashaan, has made it's use next to heretical for centuries. As a result, it has survived as the quasi-secret language of the Vid'Oshi faith, and by extension, the language of the shokigara. Most average Dal Karchuan are not even aware the language persists at all.

Writing System

The symbols of the original letter forms has been retained over the years, but it is generally accepted that many words have shifted their spellings over the many centuries since Olde Anglesh was a commonly used language of trade and academia.

Geographical Distribution

The language is as distributed as the Vid'Oshi. Like it's only remaining speakers, it is found primarily in capital cities and large towns in the southern nations of Yatan'aa.

"Deað bið sella Eorla gehwylcum þonne edwitlif."

- Ancient Olde Anglesh phrase, often posted somewhere in a shokigara workshop
